Centre stand refurb

Small update - for those genuinely interested and considering the job.

Tomorrow the stand and spring carrier plate go to the powder coating outfit near me. But first job today was to get the old bushes out. Unbelievably I didn't have and steel rods to turn and make a drift. So my impatience got the better of me and I decided to punch them out. Very glad I did!

So I've found the bushes are steel (so can only guess the copper I was seeing was from the original grease ). But perhaps most interesting I see the bushes are actually split. I heated them, but don't think it's necessary if you punch them out.

It’s pretty obvious that a stand is attached on both sides. It only shows one side in the diagram because what’s the point of repeating an identical drawing for the other side…. If they were different it would have a different illustration and each would be identified as ‘LEFT’ and ‘RIGHT’ :thumb…. .. carry on confusing yourself :D

Who said it wasn't attached on both sides? Only you I think

I was asking if they're is a bush on both sides. Which is not a given. Is it. Read post #1 again...

Never had you down as being so presumptuous But noted. Oh, you missed that the image on the fiche didn't match my stand either. It maybe you presumed I knew that?

A stand is a stand, I’ve yet to come across any main stand that has a different fitting on each side. Just looking at your own stand would’ve told you that, then looking at the exploded fiche tells you the detail of the parts that you can’t see, but must obviously be the same both sides, hence one exploded drawing. You posted the picture of a different stand, not me :D Just get on with it, turning a ten minute job into a thread with 24 posts so far :D

In 2006, OITC, the GS stand changed from having a curved tube cross-brace to a straight brace.
BMW did not update the parts fiche to show the different shape.
Manufacturers' parts diagrams are used to identify parts by their location, not as engineering assembly diagrams of the physical parts. This is very common throughout the vehicle manufacturing industry. The same is true for not showing all bolts, washers, bearings and bushes when they are identical, just the quantities required are given.
The intended users of the manufacturers diagrams are the technicians and parts department personnel, some familiarity of the vehicles and fiche design is assumed. New employees have trainibg coyrses to learn how to use them. In our internet based society we have access to those same diagrams but must learn by ourselves 😉

Mine was built in May 2015 with a straight brace.
HTH.

My stand bent and twisted about 10 years ago. I bought one from motorworks to replace it. The bolts seemed very loose when I went to fit it.
I asked my dealer if there were different stands for the GSA. They said no. I mentioned the bolts were quite loose. They said that it was a bit strange. Anyway I packed the captive bolts out with a few more O rings to make it fit snuggly. It has been like that for 10 years now.
I'm guessing from the info in this thread that said bushes are missing from mine and have been for years without a problem. 😁😁

Well, you seem quite happy contributing, though I wonder quite what it is you think that contribution is? Bit of an A is coming to mind

Your thinking sounds like you're probably right - ref the absence of the bushes.

I have of course now understood exactly why the bushes are the kind they are. It's a good, well engineered (within a budget) solution.

This Job is now finished

Wish I hadn't waited so long. It's straightforward. The only thing you need I guess is a reliable powder coating outfit. I used ERA Rodman here in North London. They'd have done it the same week if I'd gotten it to them on the Monday.

Some pictures below. It looks like new. I ran a file over all the 'sharp' edges and corners beforehand, especially on the feet. If you're going to do this job, I suggest you give it 20min with a file looking for any edges/corners to knock off. It'll give the powder coating a much better chance of surviving.

Oh. The bushes - can I mention them - are actually a little more than just plain steel. There is a coating on the inside working face. See photo. If you're able to remove them intact before coating, then just maybe you can reuse them, but mine were very definitely finished after 13yrs and no attention.

I used Super lube silicone grease. The grease specified by BMW is essentially a high temp grease that won't affect the o-rings. Here hoping that's fine for another 13yrs

Conclusion: if you're thinking of doing this. Get onto it. Dead easy and all done within 10 days if you find a coating outfit.

That looks tidy, good result
Thanks. It's surprising how the stand, despite being hidden mostly, drags the rest of the bike down (visually) if it's a rusting mess. Well worth the effort though
