Anyone got any idea how to refit the springs on the centre strand?? I've been killing myself trying to force the large outer spring into place!!

Help is appreciated!

You can buy a tool in Halfords.

But last time I had to put a centre stand on ( my old Africa twin ), I made up a tool using threaded bar and a few nuts to hold the spring apart while I got the ends into the holes. Very fiddly from what I remember.

.

sometimes it helps to undo one of the bolts that hold the stand on it gives you a little bit more slack to get the spring on then lift stand back in position
I use a small steel hook i made up to fit spring

good luck

Cheers guys got it sort with bruit force - just got my mate to do up the bolt while I stretched the spring and stand back.

Get a number of large washers (or 10p bits if your wealthy) and insert in between each of the spring coils, that'll have the effect of stretching the spring and making it easier to fit.
Once fitted, simply remove the washers / coins one by one. Simple !:thumb2

never worked on a 1200 stand, but fitting the spring first, then bolt up the stand has done the trick pretty easily on every other bike i've ever worked on.

good for side stands too :thumb2

If you unbolt the bracket that the springs hook onto, the bolt is long enough to get started with the springs in place, then just keep tightening until it's seated properly.
Changed mine at the weekend (07 GS) and there was no problem.
