4k and although the chain seems fine it looks like the rear sprocket is knackered. Since a chain is still a fairly new thing for me I've a few queries!?

- I assume I need to change the rear sprocket & chain together, right?

- What about the front sprocket, do you normally change that at the same time?

- Bikes still under warranty, do I need to use BMW replacement parts?

- If not, any recommendations for suppliers please?

I reckon the 500m to EM bash finished them of but I need to get this done before an event next weekend - fingers crossed !

If your rear sprocket is knackered but the chain and the front sprocket isn't, something is wrong.

The front sprocket would normally wear three to four times faster than the rear.

Could you post pics of the sprocket so people could get a better idea of whether it's knackered or not?

I went down a tooth on the front sprocket at about 2k, so its only the rear thats done 4k.

I've seen far worse but the teeth are a bit hooked.

Replace (as you've already got it off).

I can only really speak for mountain bikes, and I've found that if the cogs are fooked, then likely the chain is too.

But mountain bike shops generally have a gauge that measures the length of the chain over a number of links to determine the wear.

No idea if such a gauge is available for motorbikes. Maybe a call to a BMW to ask what the measurement is and then measure yourself with a tape measure?

my XC came form the off-road school and they must have fitted a different rear sprocket. Mine is steel. I have put 30,000 miles on it, half on dirt, and its still OK. By contrast, I am on my 4th front sprocket and chain.

Is the OEM rear sprocket aluminium? or steel?

I've not long replaced the chain and sprockets on my XC.

The original rear sprocket is alluminium, and BMW list a replacement at approx £50.

They also do a steel sprocket which i think is for the f-650(which i have now fitted) for around £30.

The original has long slots in it, the steel one I have has round holes drilled in it. is that the same as yours?

OK, I have looked on the JT Sprockets USA site, and no rear sprocket is listed as yet, so I have fired an enquiry into them for a part number.
The front JT part numbers are below:-

BMW 650 Xchallenge
2007 to 2008
Front Sprocket: JTF 402.16
Rear Sprocket: JTR .47 check availabilty
Recommended Chain: : 520 / 112
Front sprocket available in: 13, 14, 15, 16 teeth
Rear sprocket available in: check availabilty

Wemoto.com list an alloy rear sprocket at about £36.50.

Pinky, can you check these dimensions shown below.
They are the dimensions of a F650GS Dakar rear chainwheel.
I have looked at a yankee steel sprocket manufacturer, and they say the XC and the Dakar use the same sprockets.
If so, JT Sprockets do a steel sprocket for the Dakar and the part number is:- JTR5.#
thus # = number of teeth ranging from 39, 41, 43, 44, 45, 47, 49 teeth.
JT Sprockets are available from several outlets is UK.

And as a rule, I change the chain and front sprocket twice to each rear sprocket.

JT Sprockets......I have fired an enquiry into them for a part number.

Reply:-

Hello Timpo

We will shortly be putting the G650X sprockets into production. Our part number will be JTR9-47 in steel, and JTA9-47 in alloy, with the possibility of alternative sizes later.

I would estimate that these items will be available within the next two months.

Sorry I cannot be more help at this time.

Regards,

Jim Irwin

Hi Timpo, just seen this post & I'm not sure if you still need the dimensions?
