Chain/Sprockets and brake pads - F800GS

Genuine question - what is achieved by replacing a 16 tooth sprocket with a 17 toothed sprocket? I mostly use my 2013 f800gs for on road use, I'm trying to imagine how this change of gearing will translate to road use.

It just makes for easier and smoother use on the roads. About 300 or 400 rpm drop at 70mph I guess. Certainly feels 'nicer' ... and for off road use its still better at the game than I am :D

Thank you for that Mickey, I may consider that when replacing the chain. I must admit, I thought that the 800 felt as though it needed a 7th gear when pushed at speeds over 90mph or so, but put that down to my mental comparison with my r1200gs.

Mmmmm those motorway miles across Belgium riding to my beloved Eifel's the bike always seemed to be busy at the 80 to 90mph cruising speeds, the 17T makes it far more relaxed :thumby:

Nice idea, But...

I too, put a 17tooth front sprocket on my '08 F8GS when replacing the chain and it did, indeed, make a good bike feel that bit nicer, but - the 500 rev drop at touring speeds put the revs right at the point of maximum vibration and my hand went numb in about 25 miles. Not great when starting a two week jaunt to the further reaches of Scotland when you live in Essex :blast. The extra vibes caused problems with my hand, wrist, elbow and shoulder and I was warned by my osteopath that I was risking permanent nerve damage
So I swapped back to the 16tooth pinion and all the problems went away :D
The other thing is that I was, and am, getting 58 mpg on my daily commute into central London and the extra tooth didn't change that. Now while I'm not saying you shouldn't make the change for me I don't see the point; and having been to Berlin and back last September with a bunch of mates the bike stomped down the French and German motorways at 90 and didn't feel any busier than my old 1150GS ever did; and still gave me better mpg than both the 1100 Pan Euro & the Triumph Trophy.
Sorry if that sounds negative but a nice change in one area can have a number of side effects that aren't so nice.

That also is an interesting perspective Superted. I use my 1200 for long day /high mileage touring and tend to keep the 800 for day trips and back laning round the Lake District. The engine is still new and tight and has been known to stall at low revs: higher gearing may exacerbate that tendency. I was not contemplating the change of sprocket until a new chain is needed, by which time the engine will have loosened up. Thanks for posting your experiences.

Thanks Superted. I'm thinking of the 17 tooth mod myself and its the first negative thing I've heard. Thanks for posting. JJH

Thanks all for further feedback, just waiting for my laziness to pass one evening to check whether rear is M8 or M10 and the orders will be in.

I think £100 is expensive for brake pads as I wouldn't keep it for 74,000 miles or even 38,000 . And even worse my bike needs front discs and pads, and rear pads. That will be £650 please sir :aidan . I'm trying without success to get a better priced set , to no avail so far.
I'm happy with the standard gearing and find the bike very very modern coming from 1100/50s , it really is a lot of fun and easy and light to ride

Who sez it needs discs? That seems to be standard answer these days. Put pads in till next time. JJH

No one sez it needs discs , mine does though.. Ppt :aidan

My BMW stealer told me my rear disc needed replacing at 30,000 miles.
I told them to bugger off..
It's ready for replacement now at 61,118 miles and I probably use the rear more than most, with my good lady on the back ;)

Ferodo sintered pads work well, B&C express for parts nearly always. Excellent service, rapid delivery.

I'm thinking of switching to a 17 tooth front sprocket & a DID chain. Is there a specific pitch of chain required?

D.I.D chain & New sprockets fitted. I can definitely recommend switching from a 16 to a 17 tooth front sprocket. Much smoother ride 😊

Same here I made the change to17 tooth sprocket. JJH sent from my iPhone 6+ using my finger

Shop local if you can, plenty of decent bike shops in London.

Failing that Motorworks are a lovely bunch of chaps in a beautiful workshop up north.

Hi! Sorry to hijack the thread... I've been looking and searching and can't find any opinions on JT sprockets ( forgive if I haven't searched hard enough) ... Are they any good? Reason I'm asking is I've ordered kit including JT sprockets and DID xvgb chain from auction site for my F800GS but before I get it fitted I'd like to be 100% ... Are oem bow ones much better?

Thanks in advance

Greg
