Do you have to remove the forks to change the fork oil?
Or can you just drain via the nut at the bottom and fill up once you have undone the nut at the top?
Of course, undo nut at top before draining oil just in case :thumb

there is a bleed nut at the bottom, but in my case the oil was so old it didn't want to come out because it was to thick ( R1100GS). removed the front forks and cleaned both, don't think it has been done before on mine…. There is a how to somewhere on the forum, shoving how to change the fork oil seal.

Are you changing the oil for a particular reason, only reason I ask is I believe the oil is not part of the damping in these models so you may be doing an unnecessary job.

I changed the oil during the fork oil-seal change - it was black and smelly, I am sure there was water involved. Definitely worth pulling the legs off, emptying and cleaning incl. the placcy bushes. Simple, quick and cheap. There is no damping or tricky stuff in there but clean oil better than dirty oil.

I'm new to GS ownership and still learning about the idiosyncrasies of the bike and was thinking of changing the fork oil just as part of general maintenance. I would have thought that the oil has to perform some function within the fork or there is no reason for it to be there. Interested in finding out what function the oil performs.

You don't fill the forks with oil through the nut at top of the fork leg :D

Lubrication, to stop the forks sticking.
