after the recent spate of "ooh glad I changed my oil as it was black/full of bits/water etc etc... I decided to do the deed..
Ordered the oil from Opie, arrived this evening, I also ordered a huge syringe to fill the drive again after.
All went according to plan and I was VERY pleased to see that my drive coupling gaitor had a thick smear of a greasy substance round the lips and absolutley NO water ingress at all, this is inspite of using it off road and washing it regularly to keep the salt demons at bay !:thumb
the oil itself was only slightly discolured at 6500 miles and there was no fur at all round the speedo pickup, which again was pleasing, best of all no discernable free play in the bevel gear bearings so hopefully I have a final drive which is NOT going to disintegrate on me any time in the immediate future !
total cost..
£15 for the oil (it'll do 4 changes)
£4 for the syringe..(highly recommended)
so about £5 a change for peace of mind....
that'll do me !:D

Eggsakertly the same with mine. Seal disintegrated within 200 miles of oil change! I have heard of others, too, with the same problem.
Mine even oil which was supplied by the dealer, so not a problem with compatibility.

Had a FD go at 3000, so i change my FD oil every 3000 miles, but i have never had to change the seal. YET:rolleyes:

Can you get a chain drive conversion for these bikes? Sounds like that would make them more reliable.
:tumbleweed
Anyway, changed mine, bike is a 2006 with 8K, no endfloat and no leaks but changed the FD oil as never believe anything is filled for life, the oil was pitch black and stunk like the above post, think I'll be changing it annually as it's such an easy job (well except for lining the splines up afterwards :drool)

I've done just under 120000 miles on the BMW's that I have owned with only one final drive issue ( replaced the bearing on my 1150GS).

But in 50000 miles on the 2 Triumphs I have owned I had to have the following work done:-

Head gasket replaced
Header pipes replaced due to cracking
New pistons ,rings and cylinder liners fitted due to burning oil
Stepper motor replaced
Fairing panels changed due to poor alignment
Chain adjuster mechanism seized due to leaving the factory without any lubrication (on both models)

I won't go into the issues with the poor finish on Triumph number 2 and the response of the factory:augie

I came back to BMW after 14 yrs and 5 Triumph Tigers, and I've just traded in my Mar '07 12GS against a new 12ADV for delivery in March.
In the two years I have clocked 32000+ miles and had one very very slight gearbox oil leak ( I never noticed it, the dealer did) and a slight weep on rear axle oil seal.
Apart from those two instances it has been a extremely reliable two years of riding with a smile.

Phil
