I know there has been a thread realting to changing the rear tyre on the R1200GS/A:

http://www.ukgser.com/forums/showthread.php/239234-Neat-tyre-changing-video/page2

But has anyone got any instructions on how to do the front wheel tyre change when your out and about and not near the AA/RAC/NationalTyres/KwikFit/et al? Obviously with the front wheel, the discs are on it (unlike the rear) therefore you cant lay the tyre on the floor without fouling the discs on the ground.

Any ideas or videos?

If you can change a back tyre u can do a front. Don't worry about discs. I never do. Jjh

yes of course, doesnt everyone? :aidan

or perhaps I am interested in finding out best practice for a roadtrip I am doing to 'the stans' where I will need to swap tyres from road biased to offroad biased.

Just lay the rim with old tyre on the new one.
Then the rim with the new tyre in the old tyre.

Every town and village no matter how remote will have a place that will do it for you.
I got tyres changed in Mali, 10yr old kid did front and rear for 20pence. Made his day when I gave him a £5 tip.
Same experience in Siberia and eastern turkey.
Poverty and remoteness is the mother of all invention.
Hence the locals are well used to repairing and re using all manner of things.
However, it is a good idea to learn to do it your self just in case you need to do it in the middle of nowhere.
Even then, from experience, just when you think you are all alone a local will turn up and help you out.
But in answer to your question, I carried a small square of good quality karimat that doubled as something to sit on.
Needs to be good quality as the cheap ones just tear.
