Reliving bike trips whilst sat at my desk....
Two questions to those in the know:

Firstly, am I likely to need a replacement O ring for the fuel upmp assembly? I ordered a Full Service kit from a mail order BM dealer and it came with all sorts of washers, but no O rings for the fuel filter change. should I wait till I can get hold of one, or can I forge ahead? I want use the GS next week for commuting as the CB's back tyre is looking a bit on the bald side, so I don't want to dismantle the tank and find I can't put it back togather the same day.

Secondly, Neil (Steptoe) pointed out how the fuel filter can be kept outside the tank, one the side of the bike, maknig access and changing easy. What do I need to do to acheive this? What do I need (eg fuel line to cut to size, extra tube clamps etc).

If I can, I'd like to do this at the same time as changing from my original tank to the ADV tank I recently acquired.

Cheers.

There's a Steptoe how-to in the font of all wisdom. You need 2 extra clamps to bridge the gap where the fuel filter would have been - the BM ones are a bastard to get off and a bastard to put back on again! I think they're only supposed to be used once.

I don't *think* you need to change the o-ring but I'm not 100% sure as it's ages since I did mine - I don't remember changing mine anyway.

Pluck

PS If you do the external filter mod and your bike doesn't have ABS - there's a perfect spot to house the filter under the tank where the ABS unit would have been. :thumb

Changed the filters in my 850R and 11050GS over the last 6 months. In both occasions I didn't change the big O ring and all appears well. What I did have was 3 broken studs in the filter housing on the 1150 which I had to drill out and replace. This was despite using liberal amounts of WD40.

Cheers

Nick, can I watch you do it? Mine is 5,000 miles overdue, and I'd rather learn from your mistakes:aidan

If i were you id wait until you get a new o ring before stripping it down just to be on the safe side.

No need to wait, tho' Dazco may be right. as it happens it looks like my O rings were ok, but if they weren't it would be a right pain to start from scratch!. On the whole t'was easy (ish). Technically not hard, as long as you don't charge in and think before you spanner.

So far all is well. Filled tank. No leaks. Started her up: still no leaks, so all's well, I think. Fuel filter is now on the outside, so I need never take off the bloody fuel pump assembly, unless it goes wrong.
