Cheap junk..

So my Valeo starter blew up yesterday, luckily as I was putting it in the garage. Stripped it this morning and the magnets have detached them selves from the wall. Don't want the risk of re bonding them and breaking down somewhere.

Nippondenso my best bet ? Or any good alternatives out there these days ?

If it’s a keeper,
Spend the dosh on a Nippondenso.
The early valeo starters are ok,French built.( magnets aside)
They have metal reduction gears.
Later ones, and the copies have a plastic ring gear,which can strip.
Edit,
If it’s not a keeper you could just replace the motor housing

That sounds good. The starter looks almost new just stood a long while

Oilhead Info I can't find the Yoke just yet

According to X referencing the Yoke for an Oilhead Valeo is LINKY I checked on 2 sites and came back to this each time But Please check its correct for you before you order

I'm in agreement that Valeo starters are worthless junk. Probably less than 50 journeys before mine failed catastrophically. Very happy with the Nippondenso since but we'll see if it lasts!

I bought one of these last year: https://www.motorworks.co.uk/starter-motor-and-solenoid-ela44672-1.html. No doubt it's Chinese junk, but it hasn't failed so far and it starts the bike far more easily than the original Valeo did. The old one went the same way as yours.

Apparently there was a design change with a move to clipped magnets over glued. This was a new starter around 2018. I'm sure I was just particularly unlucky and my dislike of Valeo is out of proportion, but with the amount of hassle it gave me not longer after the original starter failed I vowed never to touch a Valeo product again

It might not last. Have been through the same process of dislodged magnets and replacement with a 'Denso. Was warned that some of the Densos fitted to airheads (and torqued correctly) could crack their castings and sure enough after around a year or so, mine did too. So I'm back with Valeos with clipped magnets and have never had an issue since. Good luck!
