Had my first starter motor failure not long ago
It just jammed up and stopped working...Without warning
So time for a rebuild and this is how i did it
Took the old unit apart to find this
A loose magnet and a slightly damaged armature
After a bit of research i found out that the motor off some of the small engined Citroen's and Peugeot's is very simular
Because i could get one trade i used a recon unit instead of a second hand one as a donor
This is what it looked like
The old unit stripped down
I took the new unit apart to see how they compared inside
And to my surprise the motor section was exactly the same. There was even an improvement in the magnet attachment with some metal strips fitted to help keep the magnets in place
The solenoid clutch reduction box assembly looked the same too..
The gear that engages with the ring gear had the same diameter and the same amount of teeth but was a tad shorter ( i think theres a good chance it would be fine too )
You can strip it down and just change the gear
But because my motor was working perfect before the magnet fell off i decieded to rebuild it and only change the motor
The finished item
Less than half the price of a Motorworks recon unit
and if you can find a secondhand unit cheap you could repair you origonal for very little
