Cheapest Castrol Power1 10w-50 ?

My 2010 GS handbook specifically mentions Castrol GPS 10W 40 - and then lists other suitable grades :nenau

Quite strange...Mine from 2008 firstly proposes 20W-50..
I know that the "new" 2010 engine is the previous HP2s one....
I am wondering what was in the HP2s riders manual.....
Why the boxer now requires semi-synthetic ???

They used different metals in 08 09 and 10:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D so they must need different oil:augie

2008, 2009 is the same engine.
2010 is the same engine plus a few things (that I do not know the engish translation). I do not believe the so called engine metals have been changed 2 years ago that HP2 was produced....

Interesting discussion. FWIW, over the winter I'd been using Mobil Super S Semi-Synthetic 10W40 in my 08 GS. The oil consumption dropped to zero (no refill necessary over 3,000 miles from one oil change to the next), while with Castrol Power 1 20W50 it's around 0.4L/1,000 miles.

In light of BMW's revised 2010 recommendation I'm seriously thinking about using 10W40 during the summer as well.

Make Q8 SBK Racing (wouldn't matter if it wer Motul Castrol Shell et all)

Used it in all my Bikes since 2003 when I discovered it.

It is all very confusing - the 2010 manual says 10W40 - the BMW website has a Castrol leaflet that recommends Power 1 Racing (fully synth), the dealers just put in whatever they think is ok and the 'gurus' keep changing their minds!!

My 08 GSA started with 10/40, then went to semi snyth at 6000 service AND at 12000 to fully snyth!
My 2010 started with mineral running in oil, I wonder what spec that was :augie and fully snyth at first service..........:beerjug:

When my 08 MU GS was serviced in January, they changed it from 20W/50 to 10W/50

Daft question time - am I ok to mix 20W/50 that I already have in the garage with the 10W/50 or should I cough up more dosh and get 10W/50 from the dealer?

read the manual - it should have a temperature/oil weight range chart.

Or do what 90% of owners do and use a 20/50.

Final decision

I finally didn't come into any conclusion according to what oil I should use to my 2008 GS......
The only thing we agree is that we should change oil quite often....

Some piece of advice :rob
1. Never mix different viscosity oils
2. Try to change the filter every time you change oil because the remaining oil in the filter "pollutes" the new oil..

POINT 1 ... Doesn't really matter about mixing viscosity engine oils, Mineral with synth or visa verse does
POINT 2 ...Good point about changing filter regularly .... but what about the oil in the oil cooler & the lines?? other than taking them off to drain them, the only way to get this oil out is to flush it..

Sorry to dust this one off again, but I am looking for a top-up for my 2009 GS that has now got the synthetic 10w-50 following a recent service.

To save people wasting time looking, I have been told by a well known proprietor of oil that Castrol and BMW have a deal going on the 10w-50 in the UK meaning the only place you can get it is through dealers. :augie

So, I will take the advice the chap who gave me this info (and others on here) and just use any good 10w-50 synthetic as a top-up. Fuck BMW and their (alleged) racketeering.:rob

Considering the vast majority of users on her do so few miles they could put 3-in-1 oil in and they'd never notice the difference why bother?

For those of us who do a large amount of miles then price becomes an issue(well, for those of us who aren't minted), and there's people on here who do great deals on oils and stuff.

Whatever grade of oil you decide to use

I ain't getting involved :augie

I buy my oil from this company. good deals , quick delivery , no problems

http://www.opieoils.co.uk

You need to register but its worth it IMHO

Just got 5 x 1ltr for £25 delivered and all in 1ltr bottles. 4 for the change, 1 for top ups ...simples

As original poster, I am not asking for advice on oil. I have Castrol 10w-50 fully synth in there as supplied by BMW at my recent sevice. My point was that you can only get that particular oil in the UK from BMW dealers and they can charge what they like.

I’ve been sorting out oil this week for my 20,000 2006 GSA after being told to use Castrol Racing 1 10/50 and just came across this post. :blast

Struggled to find a supply other than BMW (lucky I’m not in Africa!!)

Called Castrol and they only sell in 1lt containers and then in outers of 12 which means most shops wont buy it in just for one or two customers.

Although I bought if from the BMW dealer as I needed it quickly, Motorworks sell it. BMW charged £15.33/Lt
http://www.motorworks.co.uk/bmw/products/product.php?f=b&bke=bmw&q=castrol+&x=0&y=0

Btw the dealer wanted to charge me nearly £30 for 1 Lt of SAF-OX gearbox oil. Said they could keep that.

Seems silly to me that we’ve gone from a mineral based oil that you can buy anywhere in the world to something thats hard to find.

50p

Ooh - I can't let that one slide..........I'm on my 5th BMW bike and all the previous have done at least 35k miles (apart from the K1200S that exploded at around 20k).....add the 5 years consulting to BMW in Bracknell at BMW(UK)........I reckon that puts me closer to the 'experienced BMW owner' than you suggest ;)

Why the oil ? That's what BMW are telling me to put in it. NO - I wouldnt jump off the building just cos someone told me to.....YES I understand that the spec of the oil is not necessarily what the engine absolutely needs but if I'm topping oil up from a bike serviced at a BMW dealer, then it makes sense (to me at least) to top it up with what its been filled with.

...first BMW indeed......I havent even got to the number of cars yet.........or the fact I was born and grew up on the 'correct' side of the 'hills' in Preston....

:)

Hi Mate,

I would say that is 50p elevensies owes you.
Paypal would work.

Cheers :thumb
