Cheapest Castrol Power1 10w-50 ?

I have to say that's a pretty Luddite viewpoint (and one shared by a number of other posters). It appears to close off all possibility that there has been progress since the manual was written.

Your preposition also roundly ignores that BMW (who built your bike) now recommend something other than Actevo.

But it makes no difference to me .....

:mmmm

Greg

Well, that's not what they say on their own website. It says as I posted some time ago

"What BMW say, as per their own website, is they recommend two oils; as they put it

BMW Recommended
Ultimate Performance - Synthetic
Trusted Protection - Actevo 20W-50.

So they are still quite happy with Actevo - as am I & many others.

I have been occasionally known to bung the old stuff that came out of my Speed Triple into my GSA .............. the lawnmower gets what comes out of the GSA and what comes out of the lawnmower gets painted on the garden fence. I call it recycling :D

Jumping into the thread at the last minute, but what's the point of an adventure bike when the only oil you can put in it has to be bought from BMW dealers? I'm sorry, but if I was on an RTW and in the middle of China, I don't think that there'll be a ready supply of Castrol Power 1 Plus Racing Touring Riding Rockinghorsepoo Double Plus. For goodness sake, you don't even need JASO MA for it because that's for bikes with wet clutches!

For goodness sake, any decent 10W50 semi synth or fully synth should do the job, and seriously, what's Racing got to do with it? This is for an engine that's not exactly sophisticated!

Fer feck sake the castrol power 1is Jaso MA Spec :blast

Now I know why these oil threads are Shyte :D

PS My Twin Cam revs to 8500 and has bounced off the rev limiter on numerous occasions, that's sophisticated enough for me!!

That's what I mean - why bother with a JASO MA oil when the bike has a dry clutch :nenau

You don't think your digital TV is actually digital do you? Marketing hype - its a codec conversion from analogue. Parts are digits, others are wavelengths and the chain is as strong as it's weakest link.

I'm no expert, but my understanding is my digital TV is digital. As I understand it, the signal it receives is digital. The signal is modulated for transmission on an analogue transmission medium, but this has zero effect on its digital nature. The TV decodes this digital signal to generate digital picture information based on a digital decoder. The digital picture information is digitally processed to "improve" it accordingt to the using manufacturer's proprietary processing. I think the only time it gets analogue is in driving of the display generation (i.e. brightness level per pixel is obvioulsly required to be analogue).

In any case, if I were comparing analogue and digital to look for a weakest link, the weakest link would most likely be the digital part. This is because broadcasters seem to think it's ok to digitally encode with bandwidths that are far too low for decent pictures. Digital TV is far too "blocky" with too few colour levels. In my opinion the analogue TV system has a much higher bandwidth and better pictures (so long as you have decent reception).

Anyway, to keep on topic, I use 20-50W in my TV.

I will admit that it's 8 years since I worked in this field and despite doing so for 23 years I may be a little out of date. Anyway, thats not really my point so won't argue the TV broadcasting system. I'm just a bit cynical about the profiteering that seems to occur here, when BMW seem to change their recommendations although they never "unrecommend" the old ones. They manage to create a whole load of fear in customers minds about what engine oil should be used whilst at the same time ensuring it's only available at a dealer. This seems to get people so wound up about their bikes warranties they either give in and pay up for the expensive oil or give up and put it in for dealer service. Sure, if I had a 2010 model I would follow the manual, but I'm not getting sucked into having to buy it for my 2008 model despite my dealer saying thats what they would use for a service.

As Martyn H has pointed out, BMW still recommend Actevo 20/50 mineral but has anyone actually been offered that choice by the dealer when booking a service? At the last service I got a dealer to do I said I would supply my own oil as I didn't want the synthetic and confirmed I would supply 4L of Actevo GP 20/50. I was told that that was OK as long as I understood it would invalidate the warranty on the engine components. I have kept that email for posterity! I still supplied the oil, they still did the service and the dealer stamped my book anyway. Oh, and the engines getting sweeter and sweeter all the time.

Just wondering, is this new oil faff a result of the twin cam engine where they're trying to cover all the bases with one oil?

When I was heavily into CCM's they used to reccomend Mobil 1 (super expensive at the time, fully synth) for the Rotax engine in their bikes.

Everybody knew the bikes ran better on 20/50 dino oil and there were several cases of shagged rocker bushes attributed to Mobil 1 (too thin and not providing enough pressure on start up if an engine had been stood for some time).

Several of us contacted Rotax independantly; they were catagoric in that we should not run Mobil 1 and that 20/50 dino was fine.

After further investigation it turned out that CCM had a 'deal' going with Mobil.

I wonder if any other manufacturers have 'deals' going with oil suppliers........

At my last Service, the mechanic asked me which I wanted. As I was quite happy with Actevo, & have a couple of "airheads" also using it, it made sense to keep to one oil.
