Hi
Has anyone else got the silver 'alloy' coating chipping off around the swing arm shock joint. Probably stone damage.
Theres a bit off corrosion there now and it it a problem?
Thanks

Do you mean like this on the photo.
This area is just below the hugger / mudsling so stone damage to start then the corrosion gets in.
Always best to treat it to slow the corrosion creeping further under the coating.

I've just got rid of that on my GS. Wet n' Dry followed by Hammerite Silver smooth. Perfect match.

Rot WILL have got under the paint, but its mega tough paint so the problem will hide away while a scary mess develops. Clean it well back, etch prime and repaint.

I had mine powder coated when I had the frame done. I'll tell you in 5 years time if its lasted as well as the OEM paint.

Why this should occur is beyond me in this day and age .
I am not a great fan of Hammerite but....
I had a similar problem but with front forks and used Hammerite silver, I did prepare it with Hammerite special metals primer first. It seems to have stood the test of time.

BMW use a mega tough paint/coating. Its so hard the only way to remove is by chemical dip. Grit blasting will gouge the underlying metal before it takes off the paint.

Tough paint is all very well but all paint will pin-hole and this stuff hides any creeping corrosion underneath. I got my swing arm and FD case powder coated while the FD was being rebuilt. Time will tell if it was a good move, but the new coating is a lot softer than the old OEM paint. I believe it will resist stone a lot better than the mega hard original stuff.
