Just had a good look around my 04 1200gs last night prior to mot and noticed a slight bit of play in the rear swing arm. Has anyone ever had this problem? I take it there must be a bearing that is gone.

Yes, it could be that the taper roller bearings need adjusting but more likely they need replacing due to wear as they are not a sealed bearing. Laser tools make a special adjusting tool or you can grind open a socket and use an Allen key.

The previous owner of my bike mush have killed mine with a water blaster so I had rusty balls. When I priced the BMW bearing I had to sit down. I looked it up in the SKF catalogue and there was no equivalent. So I just chose a sealed ball bearing race rather than the special taper roller from BMW. It worked fine and did another 25,000 on it ..... it was still doing fine when I sold the bike.

It's laser tools part 4740 and costs about £17.

New swing arm taper roller bearings are BMW part C33.17.2.311.729

The ones I have as spares are marked as:

FAG Z-539816.01.TR1. HUNGARY 18E (and are sealed on one side only).

You should be able to cross reference these at a bearing suppliers if you need to replace them and BMW are out of stock, probably cheaper too.

Try adjusting the bearings first before spending money as I bought new bearings for my old bike then found the existing bearings just needed a nip up.

What a shame grease nipples seem to be hinges of the past.
