Friend is interested in buying a GPS unit for use in a car. Fairly broad requirements - e.g. route directions, ability to download maps for different countries (especially New Zealand) and portable.

Any advice and guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Check out the new Pioneer systems. Very very nice - in Japan they are now available with hard disc so no DVD or CD's needed , huge mapping capacity and even when you go into tunnels the thing still keeps on working out what speed you were travelling and keeps track on you route , touch screen , voice activation and recognition and all kinds of lovely features but it's a pure car system. You can't use it on a bike.

If he want's a car/bike system it's got to be Garmin . There are others but I don't think the options and range come close to what Garmin has on offer .

I've used my SP3 on both my bikes and in my car. You can't get much more portable than that.
It's not without its faults (as have been discussed at length on this forum) but it is a very good piece of kit.
I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it.
