Choosing luggage for the new 1200GSA

I'm probably/certainly/maybe going to buy a 1200GSA in the next couple weeks. Immediate problem is a long trip to the Pyrenees at the end of May for which I will need luggage - preferably hard.

So, any hints as to which panniers etc. to buy for the new 1200GSA?

I'd prefer it not to be (much) wider than the un-panniered bike because the rest of the party will be on R1200S's or similar and prone to slipping through the traffic at speed.

On previous trips on my 1150GS I have managed with the Touratech tank bag + side bags and a Givi E45 top box.

+1 If the mirrors go through so will the panniers. You just need to know that and have confidence in your filtering abilities.

Indeed 'mind' has a lot to do with it. However, the GIVI panniers on my 1150GS are significantly wider than the bars and I have 'brushed' cars with them

The Vario panniers look attractive. Anyone got a pair? Views??

As above. The standard panniers are no wider than the front of the bike (well about 10mm IIRC)

i have the vario panniers on my bike however i think that the ADV is more suited to aluminium/metal boxes - if i were youm i would go for the bmw aluminium boxes - expensive mind you - the vario on the other hand expand and contract and are certainly narrower than the metal ones

Mind does have a lot to do with it, and cage drivers tend to 'mind' having an interface with aluminium panniers and so get out of the way

Quite happy with the width of my Vario panniers when unexpanded. Haven't tried tham expanded yet

hi ,i'm with darkhorse . have a look at jesse oddesey bags, i have a set , they hold 110 litres are top loading , and are way narrower than the bars, low centre of gravity as well

He is the 'vendors section', top bloke & quality product.

on my 2nd gsa now,first one had ali boxes which were ok,bit difficult to get up in the loft when i wasnt using them and they have no handles,(but u can buy seperatley)they mark easily..decided on the varios this time, have handles and easy to throw in the loft,its all personal choice really....

I think you've got too many housebricks in the Left Side Pannier.........

With what I've learned about panniers - If I was getting a new GS or GSA - I'd get a slimline exhaust can, and get a set of symetrical Holan mounts.

Then, you can get a pair of Touratechs, Cajas, ArdCases, (possibly Metalmules)and in the future - if you wanted smaller/bigger panniers - it's a simple task.

Varios are clever, but are freakin' heavy - even when empty.

Thanks to all - especially Blackal for the list. I also hadn't considered the weight of the panniers. To be honest I don't expect to carry more than a 10 days worth of gear for only me - no pillions on these trips - and we stay in hotels, so not a massive amount of gear anyway.

Hmm, just looked at Jesse's Oddyssey II's at Twowheeltrekkers. £1k for a pair of panniers - or 'bags' - is a little beyond my sense of humour - at the moment!

Don't mention it - I can't for the life of me remember who published it originally - but the credit should go to him.

Seriously - have a trawl through the ArdCases thread, and see what designs have been made. I added keyed hasps which upped the cost to £400 - but I still think they are the best VFM just now.

Not instantly detatchable from the bike, but inner bags sort that out.
