Has anyone on here gone for the chrome exhaust option?

In fact it's only the downpipes which are chromed to stop the ugly looking brown colour which is automatically left for good on the standard finish!
Is it worth the 110 Euros or 80 GBP BMW are asking for it?

Or wouldn't the majority of us worry about the brown colour? Maybe the price difference when I come to sell it (which I hope will be in a long, long time) won't make much or any difference?

I'd like to here your views :thumb2

IMO the chrome ones are not worth the money, they still go brown unless you are a 'cleanaholic'

I've had both and if i had a choice next time I wouldn't bother.

I had the chrome option (because it was on the bike in stock) but as far as I can see it doesn't make any difference. The chrome still discolours. Spend the money on a ferry ticket instead.

:nono Full system is chrome. My bike came from dealer with this fitted and I asked them to change the can to the satin finish instead as I prefered it. Kept the chrome downpipes which have blued up nicely, no browning.:clap

I've said it before but, as somebody who grew up with quick rot chrome exhaust pipes on motorbikes why anybody would want to make the retrograde step of having a chrome exhaust on a bike like the GS (and pay more for it  ) is beyond me :nenau

And if you are a 'cleanaholic' a good application of Wonderwheels brings the SS up like new anyway :thumb2

chrome exhaust

also depends how much you actually use your bike ! If its coated in mud more than ridden on roads, then might be a different viewpoint !

AFAIK, they are actually the same SS pipes, but chromed. So it's hardly a retrograde step and with luck, things have moved on from the 60's.

Yeah, that's what I used to think but, as another thread on the same subject pointed out, you can't succesfully chrome SS so the pipes are infact mild steel. Does anybody have a difinitive answer on this?
Also, as far as I'm aware, chrome plate itself will dull/pit/corode over time?

And less of the 'moved on from the 60's' young man, I'm not that old :rob ;)

Chrome headers are now a free option in the UK. I have just taken delivery of a new 2007 bike with chrome pipes at no extra cost.

I had chrome pipes on my last 2005 bike as a cost option and they did discolour but in an attractive gold/blue way. Stainless pipes just look dirty when discoloured.

Agreed, mine look worse than stainless now :D

Hi

A bit out off topic but how do you clean the chrome pipes?

Thanks

O.

Chrome pipes

Got my 1200 in September last year. Commuted through winter on it. Washed it once a week, only used WD40 to bring them up. Initially OK, blued very nicely. Went two weeks without a wash, and are now partly blotchy and discoloured. Will use a chrome polish on them when weather is a bit warmer. So I guess its a matter of cleaning them regularly to maintain the chrome. I think they are worth it just for the cosmetic look.

Have also got to say that the finish on the 1200 has impressed me a lot over the winter. Even the bolts have resisted corrosion, just a bit of discolouring.
