Circumnavigation of USA

Hi all,

I have been invited to go on a 5 week trip of the USA with a couple of good friends of mine in the US doing the drive plan as below.

I was going to rent a HD from Miami but before I do that, can anyone advise me on the pitfalls, red tape, insurance, shipping and anything else if I was to take my GS over to the US? - what will the cost be of shipping the bike and how do I do it! (oh gawd, just thinking about the logistics as I type is making me think that rental is the best option now!)

If I take a Harley - which one should I go for?

The trip is planned for September this year, my bike is in Edinburgh but I am working in Singapore (so time is at large regarding me getting back to the UK and then on to the US)

For circumnavigation you'd be better off hiring a boat

I am reliably informed that the cut off point is 6 weeks - less and you are better off hiring, more and you are better off shipping your own bike.

There are some serious miles in your schedule - the hire company will also charge you a milage excess so factor that into your costs.

With a HD and those miles, your main risk, I would say, is sheer boredom.

Around Pheonix it can be b*stard hot - 500 miles in 45'c will test you ;-)

The heat is not really my concern (you want to try working day in day out in the field in temperatures of over 50 degC with r/h in the upper 80's- ouch!- the boredom and slight embarrassment of riding a HD is though!
