I just intalled all maps to my PC only then used basecamp to install UK only to the Zumo550 and then used bascamp to install the rest to the memory card.
If you are not using bascamp then download map installer from Garmin website.

I did install the installer, and then followed the instructions from there - but there was no mention of basecamp.

I'll try what you suggest.

I did the upgrade last night - it took over three hours to complete but ran without a hitch.
It did need Map updater v4.5.0 to run (Mac)

Yep, the reason the map names are in red is to let you know that they will not fit in your gps unit.
You will have to pick a black area that fits and tick the box for download to computer as well.
This will update your gps with the chosen area and also will update your computer with the complete maps available.
After the download is finished you can then transfer map tiles are not in your gps and put them on your memory card.

Sounds a bit clunky, though - it seems to indicate that the "black" choices will fit completely on the GPS, but choosing the "Red" along with a folder on the PC- - will work (according to the text that is).

Will give it a go tomorrow

AFAIK you cannot choose an area in red, hence no OK button.
The folder option is just for use on the computer so that Mapsource/Basecamp knows where the maps are.

Do you mean Western Europe?

There's a way to get all of Europe and complete Junction View (JCV file) onto a 660 now that you can install to SD card. I've done this and it works well. It means that you have to forego the eye candy that is 3D buildings, no great loss IMHO

1/ Install mapping to SD card, this will create an IMG file in the Garmin folder of your SD card along with an unlock file.
2/ Copy these to the Garmin folder of your GPS after deleting the GMAP3D.IMG file and any other associated files.

That's it about 500MB of free space remaining if you've kept only the voices you need. How much free internal memory do you have available if you deduct the current GMAPPROM.IMG file from the total?

If you're wary then backup the internal memory to another drive first.

With the 550 you'll still be stuck with a limited map-set I'm afraid. How much memory space do your have available if you deduct the GMAPPROM.IMG from the total?

I downloaded the latest version of CN2013.20, only because I bought a new MacBook and needed to download Basecamp to it(this meant I had to do an update to unlock map view in basecamp without having my device connected).

All went without a hitch just updated using the update tool in basecamp (I got an automatic warning that a later map set was available). Download took about 4 hours. Got the usual warnings that the map set would not fit but just continued with the download.

All seems to work well (even if basecamp is taking some getting used to because was previously MapSource) did a route on basecamp and also imported a route - rode them both at the weekend and it was faultless (apart from the usual Garmin "turn left in 150 yards" which turns out to be a corner....)

All in all the smoothest upgrade I have ever run - maybe it is because I was starting from scratch.

OK, I get it... Selected them in Mapsource, fairly easy but you have to be careful not to miss out the smaller tiles. Some tiles just cover a city which you can't see that you've missed when zoomed out. IMHO it's best to select everything and then de-select what you don't want.

The problem with the 550 is that, due to map data bloat, there's limited space on the internal memory. What's the safe size with everything such as voices etc. on there? As I don't have a 550 I don't know what it is.

As I was upgrading I just deleted the old GMAPPROM.IMG file and all associated files. I don't delete mapping from the PC until I confirm a successful upgrade, so I can always step back. If the worst comes to the worst I can re-download from Garmin anyway. As updates are every approx. three months that last three are always available from there.

Installing to the SD card places the 3D Buildings file and the Junction View file on the internal memory and the mapping on the SD card. Delete the 3D Buildings file and there then enough room for the mapping to be moved back to the internal memory.

ISTR that the update gave the new mapping on the SD card an odd file name, I just changed that back to GMAPPROM.IMG.
