City Nav 2013.40 Europe mapping is here

If Garmin Express is working for you it asks where you'd like to put the update.

Due to the well documented issues with card reading in the 660 (hopefully cured now) I've never looked to see if Map Updater does, though I suspect it will in the "options" screen.

Not on the 550 it doesn't I am afraid..........but perhaps it isn't meant to be that simple with the 550. :blast

Thanks for the response though. :thumb2

I've just updated my Nav IV to 2013.4 with Garmin Express- I looked very hard and couldn't find an option to install on the device and the PC. It just installed everything (full Europe with 3D) on the device and SD card. It also did a firmware update.

I thought I would check again to see how to download onto the PC, so plugged the device in again - and it tells me I need to update to 2013.4, and the new firmware upgrade too! I checked and it definitely has both installed. The size of the new 2013.4 was 3.9GB.

I then went to update Mrs Berin's 550, plugged it into Express - did a firmware upgrade, told me new maps were available (2.8GB for all of Europe!). Despite that there's a 4gb SD card in the Zumo, told me there's not enough space and asked me to select a region, then went into a screen where I could select region, and whether to install to device, device and computer or computer. I selected computer, whereupon it took me back to the screen where it told me a firmware update was needed!

I think it must be not clearing a cache somewhere!

So I went back to Map Updater.

Greg you missed an option setting.
It's all still an arduous task, like this long post, but that's kow it is. So Lifetime Updater app (Mac) is now redundant and replaced by this new Garmin Express thing.Whole of Europe download on 5Mps to Macnbook took 57 minutes. THEN you use Garmin Map Manager to clear space and remove older maps. THEN you use Garmin MapInstall to select the required areas and sent to Zumo/Nivi and that takes another 1hr 33 mins on a fast laptop, Thats a lot of bothersome complexity which is too much for some and its easy to miss the settings option controlling where maps are downloaded to. THEN you need Garmin POI loader, to remove old POI's. THEN you need to shut down POI Loader. THEN you need to re open Garmin POI loader to load new POI's (Speedcamera warnings etc). Why so many applications needed? FFS Garmin, can't one application do the lot? Its clever but not so clever!

(For anyone not clear about this, you can save maps on the Zumo/Nuvi or on any attached SD card, because the devices search for all maps stored, even if on SD card, when booted. If you're going down the SD card route, its much quicker to stick the SD card in your computer for the transfer, then relying on a slow USB transfer to the unit)

Garmin never were ones to make things easy :blast :D

That's normal, the update on the 660 includes the Junction View and 3D Buildings files that the 550 can't make any use of. Stands to reason that they won't install it if it can't be used.

Garmin Express seems a little flawed :(

Just to make matters worse I've just had this from Garmin:
Dear Bumpkin,

Thank you for contacting Garmin Europe.

The latest City Navigator Europe NT 2013.40 mapping update has been
temporarily disabled due to a potential issue in the cartography.

Our engineers are currently working on a solution to this and are acting
upon this as highest priority.

As such, no map updates for the 2013.40 version will be available until
we are completely satisfied with the new map update.

I'm sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused.

If there is anything else I can help you with then please let me know.
Alternatively you can search for a solution here: http://www.garmin.co.uk/support

Kind regards,

Danielle Harding

Guess this means that those who have already installed 2013.40 will need to do so again once they've fixed the problem...

Well, according Garmin Express, 2013.4 is available for the 550 now, despite the fact I've updated it already. I started the download to see if it works, which it does. I wonder if this is the new corrected version.

It's still available for my Zumo 660, which I've already updated, but not for my Nuvi, which I haven't. 2013.30 is also absent on the list for the Nuvi (I'd missed that as well). 2013.30 is reputed to have an issue as well, the issue with the .40 mapping appears to have prompted them to withdraw it's predecessor as well.

I think they've taken the stance that if you already have it then there's no harm in having it again. I'm not sure that you can down-grade you mapping without some extra work (possibly deleting the current map-set entirely would work... I don't know).
