The nice people at Garmin have sent me the City Navigator Europe V8 DVD.

I have loaded and unlocked the contents of the DVD onto my PC, no problem.

I then highlighted all the maps using the 'Map tool' and asked the PC to send all the maps to my BMW Motorrad Navigator II GPS device. The PC went through most of the process and started to send the maps to the Motorrad Navigator II GPS device, but it never completed. I know that the Navigator II was receiving the data, as it told me it was. I tried again, no joy.

On starting the Navigator II is now receive a message, 'Maps are not accessible', I guess meaning that the maps are not loaded at all or that all the maps are not loaded.

The Motorrad Navigator II GPS device has a 2.0 GB compact flash card properly installed.

Is it that a need a bigger card?

Anyone got any ideas?

Thanks,

Richard (Wapping) Nash

Thanks eveyone for the help.

I thought 2gb would be ample.

THIRD TIME LUCKY! ALL NOW INSTALLED.

I think I found the problem. I was running AOL at the same time. I think AOL was switching to a sort of 'sleep mode' whilst there was no internet activity (during the 1 hour 22mins to transfer the map data from the PC to the GPS device) and taking the PC with it. I switched everything else off and it seems to to have all transfered all OK.

Once again, thanks for the help. ::thumb

Hi, does anyone know what option I should be choosing on the Garmin website for a v8 upgrade (options below). I have a BMW Nav II Plus.

1. City Navigator Europe DVD (traditional format only, EXCLUDES C320 and C330)
2. City Navigator Europe Update DVD for the StreetPilot 2620/2660

Thanks

I ordered # 1 for my Nav 2. So you'll want it as long as the GPS didn't come pre-loaded with the mapping in which case I'd ask Garmin. Installation is a lot easier than the v7 upgrade as it's one DVD v 3 CD's :)

Hi Wapping:

Thanks for getting back to all of us and sharing what you found to be the cause of the problem, that was thoughtful of you to do that.

I have a few tips I can share with everyone with respect to updating map versions on the 25xx, 26xx and 27xx GPSRs.

1) If your GPSR uses a CF (Compact Flash) card, go out and spend ₤10 to buy a little PCMCIA adapter that accepts CF cards, then stuff this into the PCMCIA slot in the side of your laptop computer. You can write data to a CF card that is connected to your computer via the PCMCIA slot about 10 times faster than you can write data via the USB cable. Plus - extra added bonus: You can then use the spare space on your CF card to store other stuff (not necessarily Garmin related stuff) later on - for example, you can create a folder on the card called "My Photos", and download the contents of your digital camera to it when you are on the road, etc.

2) If you are going to do any kind of really big transfer to the GPSR via the USB cable - such as a map update - shut your computer off, then start it back up again, and don't do anything with it after you have started it up other than launching MapSource and transferring the data to the GPSR. This is not because of any shortcoming with MapSource or with the GPSR, it is to ensure that maximum free memory is allocated to MapSource to let it get the job done as fast as possible, and also to ensure that other applications (such as AOL, etc.) don't screw things up for you.

3) If you have a whole lot of TSR (Terminate and Stay Resident) programs on your computer, consider killing some of the non-essential ones off (using the Task Manager) before starting an update that may take an hour or two to complete. Again, this is to prevent these other things from interfering with the update process.
