Clacks , Crunches, or cant get Neutral

Hi just got info from AJ, BMW have informed them that a replacement clutch assembly is on order, to replace mine , keeping fingers crossed hope it cures the gear change . neutral selection is fine on mine ,just the crap gear selection ,Will update when fitted.

The whole clutch? Do you know, or can you find out if it is an updated part?

Sticking my neck out here (again) but I followed this thread and I've just accepted the concensus that it's a clutch problem, but how do you explain the bad changes from 2-3-4 etc? Most gearboxes will easily do clutchless upshifts, even my old 1150GSA had no problem with those.
The finding neutral problem is again more of a gearbox problem to my mind. Selector forks, etc., etc..

My concensus is ..... there isn't a problem !

My concensus is ..... there isn't a problem !

As BMW have publicly quoted that there is a problem with 30% of bikes I think your consensus gland may be under performing, or your goolagongs are defective!

Did I mention "The Ashes"?

Out on mine last night. I must say I've always maintained that my gearbox/clutch weren't affected but the shift into first from neutral at standstill is starting to get on my nerves.

I noticed two pedestrians noticeably flinch when I shifted into first when the lights changed!

Other than that the gearbox is sweet as a nut. I'm keeping an eye on this thread to see what others get as a potential solution to these 'problems'.

Note

I was thinking that it might be an idea for the OP of this thread to amend the post to add a pole along the lines of whether your bike is affected. With the number of posts it's difficult to see who is and who isn't.

eg.

Gearbox is fine, no complaints.

Gearbox is clunky but I can live with it.

Gearbox is a nightmare and makes me wish I'd never bought it.

Can you post up here the actual words from BMW that state that there is a real mechanical problem with 30% of the bikes please - the actual quote please and the official at BMW who said it.

Well ! My only problem is selecting first from a standstill , :blagblah

The clunk and bang can be embarrassing, and i'm sure it must do some damage in the long term :blast

Now at traffic lights, road junctions etc I roll up in first and hold the clutch in until the lights change etc,

The rest of the gearbox is fine :thumby:

Hi all,

Firstly, I was told by a group of you I met recently to join this site but I didnt expect to see so much negativity! Especially toward this bike based on a few peoples problems....
Just to add to this thread though; the ONLY bike ive ever owned with a gearbox that didnt clunk was a gsxr. ALL my bmws have clunked ( r1100s, r1200gs 58 plate, k1200s, f650). and the yam fjr1300, 1200rt and gtr 1400 ive ridden recently also clunk. Ive just got used to it. This new bike is no different. Sometimes it clunks into first sometimes it doesnt.
Over the years to avoid this, I partly let out the clutch lever as im rolling to a stop which engages neutral or first much easier. And yes I started doing this PRIOR to owning the 1200lc so its always been around for me.
I have to also add that this bike is my favourite ive ever owned. Lots of power, love the boxer still and it does everything. So far so good !

Adam.

Can you provide the source of BMW's Public Announcement ? I suggest that you post it here then I will take more credence in some of the "consensus". Otherwise it is just hearsay.

Now all you have to do is park it in first gear and all your problems are over.

What does "general problem" mean?

Have those of you who say there is no problem actually ridden one of the affected bikes?

Surely general problem means every bike is affected, or does the word general have a different meaning?

Exactly where is the official announcement that 30% of bikes have a problem? Until a validated statement from BMW is presented then it is no more accurate that 'I heard it from a bloke down the pub'.

People use words differently. I was interested in understanding exactly what you meant. Apparently, you meant that a general problem would mean that 100% of the bikes were affected.

It's in my post further up:

To clarify, it was not an official announcement from BMW, it was information passed to me from my dealer, who spoke to BMW. I passed it on here to try and help others who's bikes may be affected.
