Clacks , Crunches, or cant get Neutral

Done 1800 miles on mine, changes into 1st then up to 4th still on the whole very poor. Overtaking slow moving traffic today would'ent shift from 3rd into 4th. Felt like it was hitting something solid, took 4 attempts before it went in. Not good with oncoming traffic bearing down.

This is the second time I've had this happen now and the gear box/clutch issue that some of us are enduring is spoiling (for me) a very, very capable bike. I just love the noise from the Akra when I start to give it some.

However, without doubt my bike has the worse gearbox (by a country mile) of any other bike I,ve owned in my 35 year biking history.

Looks like another phone call to the dealer then.

Yes my gearbox is getting clonky now after 4700 miles it was ok but is definitely worse now I love the bike and the exhaust note is addictive but like you say the gearbox spoils it. I am going to my local dealers on Saturday to have a screen fitted under warranty, so I shall mention my gearbox then.

mine is ok now after 4000 miles but if I get a bit lazy it does clonk a bit, ive had better gearbox / clutches but ive also had worse.

I think you just need to get used to it, hopefully there is a fix in the pipeline. and we can put an end to this post lol.

Well now got 4700 on the clock and I have to say it seems worse, I think what has spoiled it for me was a ride on an Aprilia RSV at the weekend and that was a silky smooth, ultra slick gearbox. why is that, answers on a post card.

Mine doesn't like hot days and high revs. As yours seems worse, ambient temperature may be a factor here.
I presume it naturally has got warmer in your area during August

Was at the dealers today having a new screen fitted under warranty, I asked them to check out the gearbox/clutch and they said it is fine, basically they all do that Sir.

So its a case of get on and ride it, not that ive been overly worried about it anyway. But I can at least disregard any thoughts of it being faulty. Must admit the ride home was trouble free.

That's odd, while at a local bike shop today, a chap fired up an RSV, in to first with an almighty clunk which made me shudder from at least 20 feet away.

Must have seen ten to fifteen others, all makes and sizes pull away, all to some extent ....clunked.

I traded a 2007 tuono factory for the GS because I needed to slow down however there there is no comparison between of my old aprillia box and that of the box of my LC (n my opinion).

It's just not cricket Keep cool and enjoy the ride these forums should be discussing how to ride across creaks/rivers experience of riding dirt etc whinging poms - it's a bloody great bike stop moaning and get out and ride !

Is there any update from the people with the modified clutch rods? Have you got your bikes back, has it made any difference?

If not what's the latest from BMW?

My WC was a bit clonky, like everybody's. It improved with mileage and better technique on my part. 4, 5 and 6 were good, and very good with no-clutch shifting. 1 to 2 and to 2 to three were a bit harsh. Of course, neutral to 1st is hopeless. But on a suggestion from a member at the BMW MOA, I had my service remove some fluid from the clutch fluid tank. Just enought to give some expansion space. Result: instant improvement. Still not absolutely perfect, but almost.

Apparently, fluid in the clutch tends to be pushed up in the line and into the tank with mileage. The opposite of brake fluid, which tends to go down. Maybe the push rod replacement results in a more normal level of fluid.

At any rate, it's worth a try. It won't damage anything if the fluid is kept within the limits (there is a line inside the tank.)

Vines told me today mine is down to have a new clutch rod but none have come through yet. They said they didn't know anything about a different clutch cylinder or fluid type?

Mine too at Ocean but they haven't received the rod yet. My guess is they're on holiday at BMW or their suppliers are. I understand that Givi are away on the beach and won't be back for a while, hence no top box adaptor plate, so maybe this is the way it is for our rods.
The clutch cylinder situation as explained to me is that the replacement is only for bikes which were fitted with an early cylinder design which applies to early build bikes and they are recalled on the basis of their bike build number records. Apparently the early clutch cylinder design had a wear rate problem after very high mileages.
The fluid type you mention may be the engine oil which is under review to assist the clutch to work better (maybe help it release better?). I have no news on this one.

You wonder when the dealer says they don't know anything if they don't or if they just don't want to say? He did ask me where I heard about it from, didn't seem over impressed when I said the GS forum!

Had a ride on my CB1300 today no clonky gearbox on that!

As soon as I ****** get one I will be asking for part number. Bikes been sat at the dealers for the last three weeks with another 16 day lead time on the part as of this morning. Hope it fixes the problems when it gets here
