Clacks , Crunches, or cant get Neutral

If you are having problems with the gear change, an option could be to install Pivot Pegz. I fitted these on my bike from new, and for the first 1200 miles, I didn't have ONE bad gear change. On Sunday morning, I fitted the height adjustable BMW pegs, and then went out for a 150 mile ride. Although I didn't have any bad gear changes, the box wasn't as smooth, as I could feel more through the gear lever. I then put the PP's back on, and tested it again, and the smooth changes have returned.

Don't shoot me down for this, but the pivoting action of the pegs, makes you put more pressure on EVERY gear change automatically, which leads me to believe that more force is required on every change.

Will BMW supply the pivot pegs or do you have to spend money to overcome a design fault that shouldn't be there in the first place

Why would they, as there is no design fault? You just need to put more pressure on the lever, and not make half arsed gear changes.

I had a meeting today with a couple of chaps from BMW HQ, and when we discussed the terrible gear changes on some bikes, they said that it is a clutch issue and not a gearbox issue, and that BMW are still working on a fix, for the bikes that still have issues.:rob:thumb

Was half arsed gear changes the outcome of the meeting?

I think they were trying to get a fix so that half-arsed gear changers would stop complaining because there will always be a few of them about ;)

Eh :eek

So, they are working on a fix (pushrods, oil type, oil level and feck knows what else). They have replaced whole bikes due to gearchange issues and, IIRC, a post of yours alluded to a high level meeting with WBM suits that said they were working on a fix but you couldn't divulge more....................

...............and there is no design fault

I agree with you completely.

However, my 2013 is getting better and better as the miles pile on. I don't want to jinx myself, but with 6900 miles on it, it is pretty damn good now, and that is without any fixes other than lowering the master cylinder fluid level and putting on the miles.

The gear change has got better as the clutch has bedded in and worn. The gear change will be as slick as butter on a hot knife by 12,000. By 12,100 miles it will need a new clutch and the process will all start again. :toungincheek

I haven't had a meeting regarding my 2014 bike.:rob All I'm saying is that on MY BIKE, I noticed that slightly more pressure on the lever results in buttery smooth changes EVERY time.:beerjug:

No. You said why would WBM pay for pivot pegs when there was no design fault.

And you had a meeting with BWM where this design fault was discussed - see Norfolk Tigers quote above,,,,,,,,,,,

There is no design fault on my 2014, as there are no clacks or crunches, but what I did notice is that with the lower pegs, I could feel more through the lever, on the occasional, not every, gear change. This may not bother most people, but I'm reporting what has happened to me, to help others.

This trait disappeared once I refitted the Pivot Pegz, so due to their pivoting action putting more pressure on the lever, leads me to believe that more pressure is needed on every gear change. I also adjusted the gear lever when I refitted the low pegs, so may have set it too high or too low.

Not putting enough pressure on the gear lever is rider error, not the bike, which I'm happy to admit to.:D

Sounds good...30 days return , will give it a go.

Mmmmm, I think you're being a touch disingenuous. You may well be one of the many who do not have an issue with your bike. BUT there is a fault with the design of the clutch/clutch operation/gear box/drive train. There is no dispute over that and, correct me if I'm wrong, but there are no changes between a 2014 & 2013 drive chain other than the actuating rod and owners of 2014 bikes are still experiencing issues.

As you said in your post about the secret squirrel meeting you had, WBM are aware of the issue and working on a fix - AFAIK a satisfactory fix has not yet been forthcoming?

I'm not normally this pedantic and I'm not a WC knocker, I think they are nice bikes, but you still come across as if you're in the pay of WMB?

Pivot Pegs are nice (if not fecking expensive) and I use them on my dirt bikes and have a set on my GS. I've never known them make gear changes smoother though but then again I've never had a bike with the design fault that the WC has :D

I don't know if many 2014 owners are having issues, but hope not. The meeting I had was months ago, and was about my 2013 model. Towards the end of the meeting, the gearbox issues that others have had came up, and they said that a fix was in the works.

There is obviously a problem with some bikes out there, the point of my OP today was to advise others that are feeling more through the gear lever than they should, to give PP's a go as they DO make a difference (on my bike).:thumb

BMW has made changes to the 2014, as whatever revised parts they are fitting to the 2013 models will obviously be fitted to any new bikes being built.

I'm not in the pay of BMW; they couldn't afford me.:D

One of the selling points of the Pivot Pegz is better gear changes, and rear brake, which they advertise on their website, so it makes sense.:beerjug:

I'm not normally this pedantic and I'm not a WC knocker said:
not just me that thinks it appears that way then. - 2013 bike had faults - secret meetings were had - bike replaced and all is now wonderful !!!!!

And I am not a knocker of the WC either but I am not a fan of people blindly defending ( or may be not blindly) something that clearly has faults

One flaw..................people have spent £12-14k on a new bike

They shouldn't, really shouldn't have to fit a pair of Pivot Pegz at £130ish

Anyway PP are really designed for offroad standing up and when sat down I find they hinder ankle articulation, to some degree

i dont see how you can describe your gear changes as buttery when you have to apply more pressure to the gear lever?
be honest the gearbox on these bikes is just not right is it?
and yes i could have one if i wanted,in fact i have a test booked on the gsa toilet at vines on the weekend.if as on my first test of the vanilla toilet the gearbox dissapoints i wont put my money down simples:D
