Clacks , Crunches, or cant get Neutral

..................
and andres,
if the ktm airbox is letting dust in in extreme conditions, it'll be letting dust in in all conditions. just less of it. bad news for engines really.

...and ktm have "sorted" the issue already. the 2014 bikes have a revised airbox. it seems it made no difference though

Fair point and obviously something that needs to be sorted (I hadn't realised that KTM have already had a shot at sorting it :eek) - I think I was more incredulous that PP was equating it with the gearbox issues that WMB are having.

...................Dealer wont offer you the money you have to ask. DEMAND IT. Then go buy a Honda.

Why the feck would I want to buy a Honda

Please point me to where I said the WC was a disaster?

Of course it outsells the KTM, WBM always have done, KTMs are a niche bike and WBM are mass market these days, what's your point?

As you said in the KTM 1190 thread, at least KTM are listening to their customers and will sort the issue.
Two years down the line and BWM customers are still having bikes replaced due to a poorly designed gearbox.

Let me see now, which would cause me most concern; an airbox that has let dust in to the intake system in extreme conditions or a design fault with a major componant such as a gearbox.....................

Andres

Just found out a bit more from the guy at work with the KTM:

Just got the skinny from the horses mouth, someone at work has a new 1190R Adventure - I didn't mis-hear, the problem is with the oil filter and there has been a technical recall to sort it out and because of the potential for engine damage KTM are extending the engine warranty by a year. How many bikes are affected I don't know.

Will anyone suggest the ktm riders aren't using the airbox right? Perhaps they need to alter the way they ride forwards into the air?

Giles....... You really haven't ridden a bike which is suffering as badly as the ones described have you? Be honest? You haven't had to live with it!? Ride it day in day out crunching away, fighting to get into any bloody gear? .....

:D I haven't. I've ridden two demonstrators and obviously mine and they were (are) all pretty good / average.

Look, I hear you! I accept unquestionably you have a dodgy gearbox. As somebody has suggested, I would genuinely like a go on a dodgy bike to experience how bad it is. (and I don't doubt it is).

I guess the problems with forums is trying to decipher the crap from the truth. We're used to questions like last weeks 'Is my rear shock is fecked ?' (no you're rear tyre had 20psi in it ..!!) and ultimately that plays a sort of 'boy who cried wolf' game for people that do genuinely have a problem.

I hope yer get it sorted .... :thumb

So I had the same issue: NEW R1200GSA 2014, neutral issue.

I figured out a way to resolve it without surgery, I believe....

The problem with the first to second neutral seems to be related to gentle stops in town for me. Dropping down through gears, to first, then no neutral on up shift, straight to 2nd.

SOLUTION:
Blip the throttle when shifting down to first. I tried the doggedly (no pun) and this resolves for me completely. Secondly, shifting to neutral before stopping from second also works.

I may learn to eat my words but for now this helped. So I wanted to share :)

It's nothing new Steve ... :thumb2

Your clutch plates are sticking together. A little blip on the gas as you select neutral will spin up the clutch and help it free.

This is my sort of point I guess. Stuff like this is ..... well .... it's called being a biker !! It's what you do! Sorry if I sound crotchety and Victor Meldrewish ... :D

(I very rarely stop in first and then go to neutral - nearly always from second just as I put my foot on the floor ... :thumb)

I have to confess I've only ridden 2 new GS's, Pidcocks' current demo bike and my own 2014 bought as a result of the demo. Whilst I have had a few dealer issues, now resolved, I have to say the bike, and specifically the clutch/gearbox is spot on. My previous bike was a Kawasaki GTR which had an excellent gearchange but the BM is no more difficult to get into 1st or neutral and gearchanges are generally slicker and smoother than the Kwak because the fuelling is better which I guess makes me lucky!!
I know Titto well and whilst I haven't ridden his bike, trust me when I say, he does know how and when to change gear!! It's interesting to hear some people still complaining about the gearchange on 2014 bikes though, it makes you wonder why the inconsistency?
For my part though it's a cracking bike and I'm looking forward to piling a lot more miles on her very shortly!:D

Yep I agree - a little blip helps a lot, however it is surprising how few people do this, maybe it is the way they are trained these days????? I always stop in gear though and then select neutral from either 1st or 2nd and don't normally have a issue with it.

I remember seeing a video on here about some bloke riding around the Isle Man on a 1150, Paul someone I think - when he is riding slowly in town the clonks from the gearbox can be clearly heard - it makes me cringe - the LC box is much better.

i think that's who i meant :blast :D

:D

I'm sure BMW don't actually MAKE the gearbox, a specialist Gearbox company will fabricate it as the R&D/manufacturing is too specialised and costly to do it 'in-house' @ BMW

They will buy in either a whole box or a cassette/gear cluster set, no doubt to assemble the bikes with

It will be specific, of course...............but I doubt it's actually made by BMW

I picked my WC back up from the dealer a couple of days ago (no work done on the clutch) and at 900 miles and after the first service (done a month ago on 700 miles) I have no issues with the gearbox. Neutral is easy to find and I don't hear any undue crunching from the gearbox. Maybe I just got lucky... But time will tell.

You're not the only one matty me and my pal have March 2013 bikes both on about 5k miles and have had no problems at all!!

I requested deletion of my original post and subsequent quotes which made reference to Chinese and Mexican workers building BMW engines. Whilst no offence was intended, that aspect of my post was probably misguided and I did not wish this technical thread to be derailed by it (or indeed to be branded a 'bigot').
