cleaning in-between the fins

Thats where the smaller drill sized bits come in. Having said that it is a GS at the end of the day. And it isn't worth losing any sleep over keeping it pristine. For me when my old GS got really mancky and the paint flaked off I rubbed it down as best as possible and sprayed. Done once a year it makes it look reasonable. Have a look at a one yaer old GS in between the fins will look grotty if its been used.

Cotton buds dipped in unleaded works for me

Except I would spray the area between the fins with WD40 or Putoline 1001 (similar stuff) have a coffee then go in with the cotton buds :thumby:

Thankfully now the 1150/1200's are too big for me so the F800GS & X-Country are easier to clean :D

There are things lurking between the fins on my scabby old 1100 that have red eyes and should have died out about 10000 years ago:eek::eek:

Another cotton bud fan:thumby:

I use them a lot on all my bikes

However I don't favour WD40 on a silver engined bike (or any other colour, in fact) as once the solvent has burnt off when the engines heats off the oil residue left, burns onto the silver paint and leaves a yellowy hue to the silver paint which can't be removed

I prefer Motorex 645 silicon spray, after unleaded to remove tar to leave a clear protective sheen, on the bike

Then I polish a silver engine with Mer or a black one with Sdoc 'Black & Shine' to leave it sparkly clean

All my bikes are sparkly clean, even the offroad ones and there's no shame in that

Cotton buds:rolleyes:some people just have too much time on their hands, talk about anal:eek: Why not finish off with a nice dusting of baby powder too, you wouldnt want any chaffing between those delicate fins:blast

Nowt wrong with looking after your bike, I don't think you could accuse Micky of that, he does about 30k miles per year, all for leisure and no commuting

The BMW engine and wheel paint is worse than useless. Any paint, will get holed sooner or later, but this stuff is so tough there can be quite serious corrosion under the paint before its bubbled enough to have obviously failed. Specialist chemical dipping is the only sure way to fully remove it. But not exactly convenient on engine cases.

All you can do is clean away flaking paint as best as possible, prime and repaint the area. ACF-50 will keep it from corroding too badly but it makes the almn oxide go dark grey.

Once you get past the general wash and brush up and the nooks and crannies inevitably start making the bike look grungy, I like to get mine valeted to showroom condition and then start again....... :hide

Agreed, that's why I use the Putoline 1001 Maintenance Spray, no staining :thumb2

Well that's the difference between you and me old son .... 103,000 + miles and my 800GS still looks like new, no corrosion, and now heading for the next 100K :P

I've been a professional motorcyclist for over fifty years, my motorcycles are too expensive to treat nonchalantly, they're life and death, my very reason for being. I trust my motorcycles through Siberia and the Gobi Desert ... the Karakorum Highway, and when they came back they cleaned up as good as anything in the showroom .....

So my fat bald friend you can fuck right off :D

Oh dear here we go with another argument over not very much.

Good and proper maintenance does not automatically have to include micro cleaning. But people can use their spare time how they like. I personally prefer to maintain the bike properly but not do work for for its own sake and to clean adequately but not clinically. When I want it super clean I'll pay someone like allyearbiker. So what(?) its a personal choice.

Thanks for your valuable input

I'm enlightened

Oh dear oh dear,

I never ment this to become a pissing contest over who has been where or racks up the biggest mileage, a clean bike does not neccessarily mean its well maintained or reliable. But there seems to be an awful lot sensetive people on here, you dont need much bait to get a bite.

Take a chill pill and a break from cleaning, there are more important things to get excited about, I could tell you about all my years of riding and adventures all around the globe but dont feel the need to try and impress anyone.:nenau

Fatbaldbob; yes I am, say what you see, who gives a toss, live and let live.

Now stop wasting your time on here and go clean something.:D

They're not fins, they're 'claspers' and your relationship with your goldfish is unhealthy.

Sorry guys ... I thought this was the pub :blast

It's not ... its the 1200 section, my mistake :D
