Cleaning wire wheels

Any red hot methods for cleaning wire wheels?

I ordered the Gen u ine mothership stuff which arrived today

And have just been and applied said gloop as per the instructions

Cold wheels , agitated where required & left for 10 minutes before being washed off...

and TBH there no better than when i just washed them normally .

They still have ingrained marks and stains in the ?? is it alloy? paint? anodising?

So do i leave 24hrs and have another go using a stiffer brush, or do i have to resign myself to this is the best finish I'm

going to get?

Or is there a better way to get them to come up looking like new (ish)

One of these https://www.halfords.com/motoring/c...ckets/halfords-barrel-wheel-brush-293822.html and a bucket of soapy water (Autoglym or Meguiars) rinse off then blow water off with a bike/pet dryer to get it out of the spoke nut heads etc then quick wipe with a cloth with a bit of ACF50 on it. Mine still look like new after 22k miles.

I never use 'bike cleaner' or 'wheel cleaner' on a bike, they strip every protectant and polish off and corrosion takes hold almost immediately and leave staining on the surface. Soapy water and the correct brush or cloth has always worked great for me. Others may have different opinions.

As a cleaning solution, WD40 is hard to beat. Once cleaned with a ph neutral soap such as Autoglym and dried, a clean with WD40 on a microfibre cloth should bring them back.

After your normal cleaning routine use a pet dryer or cloth to get the wheels nice and dry. Then applying either wd40 or acf50 to the rims and hub will bring them up nicely. I use a basting brush to get acf50 into every nook and cranny and then wipe down the excess with a cloth. Job done.

This brush fits perfectly in between the spokes and the bristles are perfect for getting the crap off the spokes. It'll save you loads of time and many skint knuckles as well. Price is pretty cheap and should probably arrive just before the lockdown ends in 4 months time!

Try Brasso wadding, I find it great to polish out little blemishes just don't over do it.

Is the bike new as I had an issue a few years back where the rims faded around the area where the spokes go thro the rim , not saying this is the case but if its new , discuss with the dealer . If its second hand maybe some one has used a strong cleaner that has bleached the rim , sometimes if the cleaners have not been washed off they bleed back on the rime after washing.
WD40 wipe over or silicone spray wipe seems to bring them back but needs to be done every wash. I changed to gold wheels as they seem to hide the dirt better. Good luck.

Have u tried a paste type polish for paintwork.

Autoglym and others remove fine oxidation. Fiddly to do but possible.

The black wheels on my TB always looked dirty even when cleaned with a lot of elbow grease. The gold ones one the 1250 are for some reason a little easier to look after.

I don’t use any heavy chemicals like mud off ,Just a cheap Halfords wash and wax then plenty of elbow grease to dry them up. To leave a nice finish I might use wd40 or GT 85, just spay in lightly then wipe the access off.

You certinally have plenty of time to practice anyway

Order auto wheel by bilt hamber . Spray it on agitate leave for 5 mins once it turns pink as it reacts with the dirt brakes dust etc you wash it off . It only needs to be agitated with a tooth brush .
If it's really ground in to the rims order their korrosol

Hi had the same problems with black stains from dirt and brake dust after using wd etc I tried Bilt Hambers last week and highly recommend better than anything else I have tried still needs to be agitated with a brush. Will keep using it and wheels now feel a lot smoother. I wished I would have bought some years ago its that good. Dont waste your time keep searching give it a go lol.

Just tried again using the oe stuff & a toothbrush doing a small section .

Big improvement, but still not as it should be .


I'm going to have a go with the WD40 next, then it may be on to some more exotic stuff

Edit - wd40 ? how is that suppsed to do anything lol biggest waste of time ever lol

GT85 & WD40 is good, just spray a little on a concrete surface. 3 mins later pour some water and watch the water disperse.

I clean my alloy coloured spoke rims in only GT85, hopefully prevents corrosion.

Does anyone know if this is safe long term on black rims? I use it on the cars alloys but have always been a bit nervous of using it on the bike in case it strips off anodisation etc.

I've used in on the blue anodised rims on my 1150 and it hasn't caused any issues.
