Guys and/or gals,

I really need help here.
My R1200GS is coming up to 16 months old and for the last 10 months I've had a constant electrical problem. It's let me down on holiday, going to work and left me stranded. I get the same click, click, click noise. It's been into different dealers about 8 times now to try to sort out this problem and I went out to try and start it again and the problems still there. My problem is the Prestige, where I bought the bike, have tried to wash their hands of it as they are no longer a BMW dealer. They have told me it's BMW UK i need to contact. So, I contacted BMW UK and they said it was nothing to do with them. I told them this was my third BMW and that I wanted their help to sort out something, ie. a replacement bike or something as the BMW dealer told me that my bike was probably a 'Friday afternoon' bike. BMW UK didn't seem at all bothered that they might lose a customer forever and turned their backs on me.

I was so pleased to see this thread because it seems as if this click, click, click electrical problem isn't an isolated incident. I am really worried what will happen when my waranty runs out and feel very alone in my dealings with BMW. I have contacted a lawyer who says he's willing to take my case but I don't really want it to go that far- surely BMW should provide help.

Could anyone who's got any advice please reply. I would be very grateful.

Thank you.

IBMW dealer told me that my bike was probably a 'Friday afternoon' bike. BMW UK didn't seem at all bothered that they might lose a customer forever and turned their backs on me.

Thank you.

Funny, dealer told me the same thing, I had the same reaction.
Makes me wonder what all those Romanians do from Monday to Friday Lunchtime.

I had similar problems with failures to start also (amongst a long list of other woes)

Point is:
Any BMW authorised dealer should sort this under warranty, I would have thought.

Point 2: Have you been in for the battery recall?

At risk of statin the bleedin' obvious.....

Do some mileage at high revs, charge the battery.

Quietly mentioning something along the lines to of

statutory rights ....blah blah blah.....fit for purpose.....blah blah blah....evidence on the web suggests systemic issue blah blah blah.....

worked for me ( but I went through multiple gearboxes, electrical systems, top boxes......)

thank you marcus
some good advice.
haven't even been told of a battery recalll however
dealer(prestige) said it's nothing to do with them any more- but i'll be more blunt
ps just had it recovered again

sick to death of it!!

Complain loudly to BMW Customer Services as Marcus suggests...... and find a new dealer. I'm sure there's someone on here that knows a good one in your area :thumb

BMW ASSIST GUY SAID PARK LANE WOULD BE BEST AS THEY ARE OWNED WITH BMW-GB- should I start letter writing to everyone in bmw uk and bmw in germany as uk customer services are not taking me seriously??

I'm told, by others, about a software glitch, and to use the steering lock when parked, as the system powers down completely.
This hasn't happened to me personally, as I'm new to BMW, but Ive read about it around this, and other forums.

The glitch was supposed to be sorted out, with a software update, some time ago, and perhaps your dealer never got round to it.

Sorry if this doesn't help, or you may already know about it, but i hope you get it resolved soon, however BMW Park Lane sounds promising.

As prestige are no longer a BMW dealer, your wasting your time going back to them. Surprised that BMW UK didnt direct you to your now-nearest dealer...

As the bike is under warranty, your rights allow you to take the bike to any BMW dealer (in the geographic area covered by the warranty i.e. europe) and if my knowledge of the law serves me correctly, a BMW dealer is obliged to extend its warranty service to you on behalf of BMW (i.e. they cannot refuse to fix warranty stuff you 'cos you didnt by the bike there).

Personally I would recommend highly SPC at Alton nr Basingstoke, and wouldnt go near Park Lane... But thats my opinion.

Have had BMW Assist out twice with the same click, last time the bike went to dealer they said they had basically wiped the bikes memory and re-programmed from scratch as my bike was not one that was affected by the software upgrade.
Left the bike for a full week there and it started no bother at all, long may it continue!
Don't know your own circumstances but I was using the bike most days for a 10 mile each way commute, this has now increased to 30 since the dealer had it the last time so don't know if the extra mileage is helping to keep the damn thing fully charged.
My bike is a '55' plate with almost 3,000 miles on the clock.
Hope this helps.

Sorry to hear about your problems GSCouple, it would seem that BMW have reinvented the friday afternoon bike with a vengeance. Reading the various posts on this site, it seems if you've got one, its a lemon and no amount of work will change it. I had an 04 one - disaster! now have an 06 gs which is brilliant!
The answer seems to be get it fixed under warranty and then get shot of it, either px for a new one (you should get a reasonable price - they have just mended it after all!) or go to a different make. Its very apparent that the newer GS's don't seem to have the same reliability issues that SOME of the early ones did. Good Luck!

Sell the bike. Cut your losses. Go buy Honda and spread the word how damn stupid BMW are to ignore all the problems people have with the 12GS.

Sad Bastard

If you've got nothing constructive or new to comment, why bother?
BMW have not ignored "all the problems" with the 12GS, or I and quite a few others wouldn't have bought another one.

Wind your neck in and take your heavily chipped shoulder to Honda, please.
