Clock keeps resetting

Does anyone know why this happens?

I have a 2001 1150GS non-ABS.

The time clock has reset itself to 00.00 three times in the last 6 weeks.

Once was when I slung it up the road, once was when I very gently hit a mud bank and I can't remember anything strange happening the other time.

Does the clock reset itself when the bike takes a knock or when the wheels lock or something?

Or is my clock shagged and its a coincidence that 2 of the times it happened something has happened to the bike?

The clock resets when the battery is momentarily disconnected, the fuse box loses power or the current draw from the bike drops below a certain point..I've had it after a drop, but it's usually an indication of a nakked battery.

When you binned the bike you probably stretched the wiring loom that goes from the instrument cluster to the main loom. I'm guessing that you chafed the insulation on a wire which now intermittently earths to the frame. There have been several posts on this topic recently. The faults reported vary as it is pot luck which wire gets damaged.

Follow the wires back from the instrument cluster and check very closely anwhere near where they pass a metal lump.

I had a similar problem on my 650GS. It turned out to be a blown fuse for the accesoory plug etc.Check connections before buying a battery.

Mine has been doing the same and I was told that it is a combination of a battery on the way out and freezing temperatures.

If you had ABS I would bet that it wouldn't "reset" either

Agree with above: battery only got a few months left. Get a new one quick before it conks out at a very inconvenient time !

Also before buying a new battery use a battery monitor/charger [such as optimate]. Replaced my battery and found it was fine after I used an optimate type charger on it. Keep it as a spare now!
In this weather I just plug it the charger plug into my accessory socket each night and it's fine for the morning crank up!

I'll check the wiring looms, but it does sound as if its the battery. Having said that it starts fine everyday and I leave for work at 6.30 so it's normally cold. I don't have a garage or drive so can't really charge the battery overnight.

I've fitted a HID kit to the dipped beam recently but this draws less power I think. 35Watts instead of 55W so that should not make a difference.

Any recommendations on type of battery to go for or will anything do?

Mine would reset the clock when starting the Bike this happened a couple of times last winter but was fine through the summer, it started doing it again this winter and totally died on me for good when I was about 50 miles from home The bike is kept in a relatively warm garage and plugged into an optimate all the time, but when a Battery is Knacked it's knacked. I have a 14Ah one and if you read my recent posts, I have now removed the little shelf so I can fit a full size 19 Ah one, probably go for a Westco Gel, at around 70 quid

I don't know what you mean, but I'd really like to know what sort of battery to get

I had the same issue, clock resetting, eventually blowing fuses.

Check the power accessory socket to see if there is some corrosion in it. Clean it out if it does.

The clock and the accessory socket are on the same circuit.

Finally got round to checking all the suggestions made.

Wiring looms are all ok.

Battery - Still starts every time but keeping an eye on it.

Accessory socket - Filled with green corrosion - It was ok in August.

Has anyone got any tips for cleaning the socket. Or is it just a case of a small copper brush and lots of elbow grease?

Any way of making it more waterproof or should I be regularly drying it out?

Disconnect the socket while cleaning it with a wire brush

Squirt silicon spray into the orriface every now and again

I was just thinking along the same lines, but it would be a good way of testing the battery

I had the same problem after fitting my GPS, it turned out I had blown the fuse to the accessory plug. Cant remember the exact position but it was a blue one I think.
