Hello All,
Newbie here, recently got an '02 1150 Adventure & chuffed to bits with it.
Have a couple of items of concern but not sure if it's a characteristic of the bike or needs looking at.
1) Seems quite clunky when selecting/changing gear. Is the box in need of an overhaul or selector issue.
2) At mid revs i get a vibration off the engine/front end. Possible engine mounts need replacing?
Its got 59k on the clock & has been well looked after by a fellow tosser.
Any advise would be greatly appriciated.:thumb2

oil the gear lever pivots,
change gear methodicly and firmly,
you will get used to it,
they arnt that bad once youv had it a while, depends what you had before,,
vibes? could be a lot of things, check the balance first, etc

Sounds like you have an excellent example with a fully functioning gearbox. Positive engagement of the gear selector (Cluck). For the vibes, perfectly normal but sometimes an oil change and some service TLC will reduce it. Enjoy the quirks!

Preload you gear change lever slightly, use about 1/2 clutch and blip throttle for downchanges. Also boots like BMW Savanna/Santiago semi MotoCross style help:augie:D

Welcome to the world of BM Boxers:thumb

Thanks for the advice guys, thought that might be the case but always good to get other opinions on such matters.
Another one for you lot, the gear indicator oncthe dash doesn't show the correct gear, flickers between 2-3 or stays on 5. I have a mate who's got a K1300S 55 plate who had the same problem. He got his sorted as it's linked to the ECU apparantly which changed the fuel flow/mixture or whatever..... depending on the gear its in. Would this effect the GS in the same way? Gut feeling is that it wouldn't but always good to check. Is it a simple fix, i'm handy with a spanner but don't want to bugger it up.
What is the BMW dealer in Oxford like for servicing? I would imagine expensive but thinking in might be good to get them to give it a once over. I've heard there is a mobile guy around too, any one got his details?
Thanks again, Ben.

Clarkes at Rednal is your nearest main dealer, used them over the years and not had a problem with them.

Hi Ben

Wouldn't worry about the gear indicator - mine's been doing that for the last 30k and it's fine.

Oxford are pretty expensive. There's Andrew Sexton up in Hook Norton. He's expensive too, but a spanner god.

If I were you, I'd ride a bit further and visit Steptoe of this parish. He's just off the A3 near Merton. He can fix anything that ails you.

Hi Ben,
Does your bike have a Xenon headlight? Mine does, if I start the engine with the headlight already on then my gear indicator tells porkies. It's to do with the positioning of the HID ballast. Too close to the RID and it interferes with it.

If I start the engine without the lights on the gear indicator always tells the truth.

Funny things these BM's. Take some getting used to.

The gear indicator and neutral light switch are mounted on the back of the box behind the swinging arm...:augie Well known for corrosion and well known for leaving. It can even get better with regular use...:confused

Thanks for the post Rob, where abouts in Dorset are you, I'm always down in Corfe Mulen during the summer months, hoping to get down there on the GS this year (wife & kids in the car?!?).
Mine has had a 'melting moment'. Have had to replace the lighting loom towards the headlamp. I think it had a high wattage bulb fitted previously.
Maybe that's had an effect on the gear indicator.

you have a faulty connector or a bad ballast then, mine, and several others i know of have the ballasts in the hole where the abs was, mine had 4 in there at one point, never a problem, on any of the bikes
