My clutch actuator arm (the arm the clutch cable is conected to) broke today on the way to work... nothing like pushing a GS 4km home......

Has anyone heard of this breaking before? The guy at the BMW dealership had never heard of one breaking. Can't think what would cause it to break? Anyway this little bugger is 135 euro!!! for a 15 cm long 10mm thick bit of cast aluminium!:mad:

I think I'll see if i can get it welded but i don't fancy my luck...

Anyone with similar experience? any success with welding small alu cast objects?

BMW ally is made from cheese, K rear brake levers were the same, they would de-laminate somehow!

Noddy rode all the way back to the Uk from spain without a clutch

The arm usually snaps because the needle roller at the pivot point hasn`t been kept clean and lubricated.
My old Airhead one went the same way beacause I didn`t know about this, and I`ve read of a few others going.

Don`t be tempted to fabricate a stronger arm because if the bearing seizes again you`ll rip the lugs off the gearbox.

It appears purposely designed to snap at the point shown to protect those lugs.

Buy another one and keep the pivot clean and lubricated in future.

It's nothing to do with the pivot bearing being seized or dirty or anything else.I've broken two of them, and both the bearings were fine in them,in fact, the second arm I bought didn't come with the bearing,so the old one went in.

Both mine broke in the same place as that, and I've still got them somewhere.I always carry a spare now (buy a gear box with one on,take it off then sell the gearbox again:thumb2)

I'm going to make one out of stainless one day,and then put that on and forget it.

Clutch arm

A mate had his go on his 1100, found the bearing had seized, he did have warning as the clutxch got stiff and the nipple came off the cable but wht a paion replacing it!. Tried to lube it befoe this occured but ment taking the back end off to get at it, no spraying wd did not work.

I found a clutch arm on ebay and keep it as a spare.
I think I've seen Steptoe post that it's (just) possible to change it with the swingarm in-situ although by all accounts, a right faff.

Check out Ricardo Kuhns reply on your ADVrider thread.
Looks like a result.

it is not unusual for the clutch arm to brake. three of my friends with 850 and 1100 had this one replaced last year, after braking.
it is difficult but not impossible to fit it without dismallting everything, but you must have slim hands!

I found a "Kupplungshebel am Getriebe" (yes of course it is mien herr!?? :eek ) on ebay for 30 euro so that will sort it for 100 euro cheaper!!

From the BMW dealer saying "hhmmm that's odd never heard of one of those failing! never had that part in" to several people here saying that's not uncommon at all...... ( further proving the useful nature or lack thereof of such dealers)

Thanks for the kind help! ......and the tip about small hands:blast

Just replaced one of these on my 1100. The bearings had seized up after all the African dirt and it was making a horrible noise. Luckily I had bought one as a spare to take with me when I did the Calum's Road trip. It would have been a right bastard trying to fit it "in the field". It was a sod of a job on Proff's nice electric bike lift. (Sorry no photos as lost my camera the other week:( )

It was easier to remove rear wheel and rear shock which were simple jobs. The difficult bit is unbolting the arm and getting the new one in.

The job was not completed without considerable swearing which I can't repeat here now we have our nice swear filter restored. My lovely wife heard much bad language and cursing coming from the workshop and came in with a cold beer:beerjug:

Suitably chuffed with myself for fixing this so will now take my 1100 to Hograost. Just need to get some new TKCs in the morning.:)

Good good.:thumb

That's exactly what i ended up doing. Getting the old one off was not too difficult..getting the new one on and getting the bolt on was eerr umm "challanging"
It was made ten times more difficult by my girlfriends 17 year old cousin asking a hundred questions a minute,:blast :D and me having to be polite and concentrate on him and try and answer his inane queries. ( i was using his dads garage so could't tell him to sod off:blast)
