Evening Gents,

I have an '03 1150 which has done 37,000 miles and I believe it is on it's original clutch.

I will be heading to the Alps in July and anticipate doing around 2000 miles in total and am slightly worried about my clutch.

Prolonged use of it (in heavy traffic etc) can result in a smelly clutch and I did return from an abroad trip last year on a recovery truck due to a failed slave cylinder (so am probably a bit paranoid). Having read Steptoe's comments on the use of the clutch, I do think of it more like a switch and really try to avoid holding it in for long (just knock it into neutral).

Therefore the question is, do I replace it or chance it? Your thoughts (and pisstaking) please.

TIA

James

mines on 74k with original clutch,
If you look after it, It will be just fine:beer:

I had the same with mine last year (36,000 miles) and as it needed a clutch pipe and slave cylinder I pulled it apart during the winter.

The clutch was well worn but still well above the minimum thickness , I changed it anyway for peace of mind (it may have lasted another 10,000 miles but I didn't want to risk it).

Thing is if you're anything like me and don't do it you will be a worrying for the entire trip and it will have you totally paranoid in case it does pack in.

Neil,

It sounds like I am like you and you have hit the nail squarely on the head. I don't want to be paranoid for the whole damn trip! Might have to bite the bullet and do it. Thanks.

Clutch

Hi,

I had symptoms of clutch slip, 78K miles, was going to the Alps so decided to replace the clutch. Upon removal, the clutch was only half worn. Fitted new one anyway with springs and a slave cylinder.
Still slipping with all the new parts, after a bit of head scratching, it turned out to be the rubber cush drive in the drive shaft slipping.
Same symptoms as clutch slip under load. Might be worth a look first, have a look on here, there are pics of the rubber bits in the driveshaft beneath the cush drive. The fix was a used drive shaft. Partial to the "odd" wheelie and clutch got me this far!

I had a gearbox output shaft go at 38k, So you may as well change that,While your there? :augie

Look at it this way the clutch slave cylinder is good to go.

France has BMW dealerships so if it gives you a problem get recovered to one and pay to have it replaced. Enjoy the local area in the mean time.

Thanks Chaps.

Yeah sod it, yer pays yer money and takes yer chances. No point in worrying about something that may well not happen......fingers crossed.

Thanks
