clutch diaphram spring greese.

I`m doing my clutch at the moment, and just wondered if anyone else has done a clutch and put it back together without using greese on the diaphram spring? I`m suposed to be using optimoly mp3 greese or equivilant paste, but I don`t have either in the garage, and halfords/local bike shop/motorfactors don`t have any either. I`m in ahurry to put it all back together, so is it going to do any damage without it? Also, do you know what it actually does, ie to stop heat transferance or lubrication? could I use a small amount of copper slip instead or would anything that squeezes out flick off and get on the friction plate?

Do not use copperslip, it's an anti seize grease, not a spline/friction grease.

If you haven't got optimoly use moly grease, available anywhere. it's a spline grease.
And it's the clutch/gearbox splines that need greasing, not the diaphram spring. Use it sparingly.

I was just reading from the haynes manual, about the diaphram spring, it says
"apply a smear of Optimoly MP3 greese or equivalent paste to all the points of contact between the diaphram spring and flywheel, and between the spring and the pressure plate. Use only a small amount of the paste and make sure none gets onto the friction material"
Its also got a photo of apllication of the greese onto the diaphram spring, it does`nt say anything about greesing the splines?
What about normal lm greese?

I bought some Honda Moly 60 paste from ebay, but Halfords do a high moly CV joint grease (I use this on my drive shaft UJ's etc but I'd happily use it on the splines if I didn't have the paste). Remember to use it sparingly as it's near the clutch - just a smear.

I saw the cv greese in Halford this afternoon as it happens, might nip out and get some after tea. What about the contact points though?

Steptoe's your man for that question - I've never done a GS clutch but I wouldn't see a problem with a tiny smear of moly grease on the spring contact points (I've always done that on cars)...
 
Get some from your BMW dealer they sell it in a tube quite cheap.

I didn't use any on my GS clutch change.

But if it's tiny, then what's the point? It will go out anyway after a few clutch actions. If it's more, it might get onto the friction plate :)

The theory with high molybdenum greases is that it gets embedded into the grain of the metal and polishes into a moly rich, low friction surface. You do the same thing with gun slides - I've got a little pot of 80% moly paste which I use on my guns - you polish it all away and it leaves no residue but stops the sliding metal surfaces galling under pressure.

That said, you're probably right in that it's probably superfluous on the clutch springs but a little smear can't hurt...

Just got one small problem, now its all back together the abs is showing a fault, the top light is staying on and the bottom one is flashing, lights wer`nt flashing before the strip down:augie I have got 1 unaccounted for connector though, it looks like the same sort of connector as the ones which fit on the injectors, but it`s at the rear part of the loom near, any ideas picture below.
