My 650 (15k miles) clutch drag seems to be getting a lot worse, e.g. drop the bike into neutral sitting at the lights, when you pop it back into first it makes a horrible clunk and lurches. If I knock it back into neutral and keep the clutch pulled in, it will go back into first with very little clunking, so it has to be sticking plates rather than adjustment. The biting point is right and the very top so it cant be cable tensiuon eith, if i tighten it just a minute amount the clutch will slip. Its almost like there isnt enough movement in the mechanisim. I'm considering putting another hole in the clutch arm so there is more mechanical advantage, but as the set up seems to work on other 650's i've riden i wondered if there was something internal going on.

If its under warrenty get it back to the dealers.A few of the 650/800 suffered clutch failure.Mine gives a clonk when first is engaged but doesn`t lurch.

Last serviced at BMW dealer using the reccomended oil

That doesn't really answer the question.

Try using a fully-synthetic bike oil of the appropriate grade like Castol Power 1 4T 10W-40 fully synthetic.

If your dealer has filled your bike with a low-spec mineral oil, you may find that there is an inadequate oil-sheer to stop the clutch plates from dragging.

You don't say, but is the problem worse when the engine is cold?

i dont know is the answer, but i'll check the reciept when i get home. But was doing it before last service anyway, but again dont know what oil was used. I wont go near that castrol stuff, had it in my race car (r1 engine) and the stuff turns to brown dish water when used hard.

Its as bad hot as it is cold

clutch also makes a terrible racket when ticking over in neutral, starting to wonder of the basket is scored or a plate has started to fall to bits
