CLUTCH/GEAR BOX OIL LEAK

Just had a 12,000 service at North Oxford BMW, and have been advised that the bike has a an oil leak which is a common fault on these bikes. the bike is out of warranty but as a "good will gesture" BMW will pay for all the parts and 50% of the labour leaving me with a bill for £138.00. they advise that they will need the bike for 2 days and will provide a loan bike.
The question is, if it is a manufacturing fault should I have to pay for the repair? and is £138.00 a good deal?
your comments would be appreciated.

very common fault on beemers in general, 1200 in particular AFAICT.

i'm told 1200 problem is down to clutch debris wearing the seal lips, so latest seals have lo-tech felt washers glued on them. when they changed mine, the clutch was changed to a new design too. no oil contamination, so i wonder if plate material was changed to something less abrasive?

will they waive the £138 if you press?. if not, i'd bite their arm off anyway.

What are your realistic alternatives?

(a) Badger BuMW for more money. If you just want someone to say, "That's outrageous, shoddy workmanship, not fit for purpose, rip-off Britain.....etc. etc. etc.", there you are. Done.

(b) Take it to an independent mechanic. If they will quote you less than the one hundred odd quid, use them for the job.

(c) Do it yourself.

It doesn't look like a bad deal. The bike is out of warranty. BuMW would have fixed it for zero within the warranty period. The extended warranty cover (had you bought it) would have cost you more.

AFAIK by you paying something towards the repair, then you get 2 years warranty on that repair. So sounds like pay up and enjoy 2 years warranty on what is thought to be a weak point

BTW is the loan bike free, if it is, an even better deal

Had mine done at the end of the first paid year of warranty, very common problem, the dealer engineers can do them in half a day, but it involves a lot of dismantling I believe. As I recall, had it not been covered by the warranty, the cost would have been £450 ish.

Most of which is labour, the parts are cheap as chips in comparison. Given that the new seals seem to resolve the problem, you may want to argue for BMW to pay the lot, and forgo the probably unnecessary two year warranty on the work.

I had (still have) the same problem, under gearbox wet with oil just out of warrantee. Problem was my stealer wanted to take it all to bits to see what’s leaking before deciding what to do

£140 or north of four hundred, and still cheaper than having bought the extended warranty (unless something else goes wrong)

I paid £360 for an extended warranty and NOG could find nothing wrong with my bike when it was in for it's 18k service last week so by contributing £138 towards the goodwill repair you're actually better off than me

Plus don't forget. Because you are making a contribution you will automatically have a warranty on the repair. £138 sounds like a result to me

take the deal! the job is 10hrs worth apparently, which at even the cheapest labour rates of specialists would cost over £300. Done mine at a specialist (motoscot) 2 months ago. Steve (who runs the shop) showed me the part afterwards...

Its a tiny ring sized bit of plastic washer worth a fiver... Presumably it perishes with wear and starts leaking.. Once again mediocre BMW "design on a budget" concept. At least they should have designed the replacing process to need fewer than 10hrs

No-brainer as far as I can see - take the deal.

They would have been quite within their rights to quote full whack for parts and labour. Half the labour sounds good to me. If the clutch is contaminated (quite possible), you'll also get a free clutch as part of the deal.

Thanks for all your words of wisom, I will take them up on their offer, I just wanted to find out if I was beng taken for a ride, but i guess not!.

Always worth asking elsewhere too. Woolaston persued my out of warranty claim for me and initially BM were going to provide the part while I paid for the labour..
They made a follow up call and turned it around so I only paid for the seals, the labour was under warranty and they let me have a loaner foc.
I ended up paying around £50 all in for the seals (all 3) and a gearbox oil refill.

BMW initially offered to pay parts when mine went. Luckily (although it didn't seem like it at the time) the dealer cocked up the job, leaving me stranded, so dealer met the labour costs. I insisted on paying for the parts, as they confirmed the parts warranty would apply for me if I paid. Only £38.
