Hello

One comment/question about the clutch (r100gs)

In the Land Rovers the mechanical arrangement is very similar to the R100GS

Engine – clutch – Gearbox – drive shaft (all separated components)

In the land Rover the clutch housing is watertight meaning that if you for any reason have to drive in the water you will not have any clutch spinning problem. Why didn’t bmw used the same concept?

Series Landies have drain plugs in the bell housing for use when fording, to let the water out, so I'm with Timpo on this one.

You are right… :augie:)

We are now specking in theory (BTW my Land Rover LW was a watertight clutch and I test it several times!)

my 300Tdi had a fording plug that had to be fitted if you were going to go through water. It shouldn't be left in all the while.

"The fording plug is used on all manual transmission Land Rovers, to prevent water, mud or other contaminants from getting into the clutch and bell housing area, when fording. When not in use the plug is stored in a bracket mounted to the bell housing on a Series Land Rover and in the tool roll of a Defender or Discovery. It is important to remove the plug from the bell housing when you are not fording because the hole acts as a drain hole for any oil leaks. If the plug is left in place the backed up oil could contaminate the clutch disc."
