just bought a 2001 1150gs with 42k on the clock. When the bike gets hot i seem to notice a knocking noise. It only seems to be noticable when i pull the clutch leaver in. I havent changed the gearbox oil yet thast something i will try. Just wondering if anyone has had this trouble?

Also there sooms to be a squeak almost as soon as i start th bike and goes after a matter of seconds, any help with that too?

Can't help with the knocking noise, but I suspect your squeak could be the alternator belt. Simple and cheap to change or check :-)

Okay it's going in tonight anyway to check slave cylinder and everything else. And no I mean hot as in stuck in traffic

There is an inherent knock to Oilhead boxer engines usually most noticeable if your just blip off idle and you hear it on the overrun, in my case anyway its proved harmless on both my Oilheads as well as a mates, for thousands of miles with no change. if it bothers you wear earplugs:D (And use 20-50 mineral Oil)

I've had that same knocking noise for years on my '02 GSA with 146K miles. Generally starts when warm and can be more noticeable as it gets hotter. Doesn't matter of the bike is in gear or not, as soon as the clutch lever is pulled in (clutch disengaged) it starts to knock.

I've searched on several BMW discussion forums and while I've come across several threads on this condition I've yet to hear 'what' causes it. Instead, the universal answer is to just ride it.....lots of oilheads make that same noise.

I'm not a mechanic at all however I'm wondering if it's the crankshaft knocking. When the clutch is engaged and everything is 'connected' via the splines maybe it's more stable.

It's not an uncommon condition so I'm sure some BMW boffin knows......Steptoe?
