My clutch started slipping at the weekend, so I was planning to replace it this weekend coming.

Ordered the parts from Motorworks, but no dispatch confirmation. I called them to chase the order only to be told that clutch friction plates are on back-order. Only made by Sachs, BMW are out of stock, Motorworks, Moto-Bins, Sherlocks all out of stock. No timescale for Sachs to re-commence supply and of course BMW will be the priority customer.

Looks like any 1150 that needs a clutch is off the road until further notice...

Apart from "walk" or "buy another bike", any help or advice?

Cookie,

Drop into your local BMW parts department and ask them if they can do a dealer search. I've used this facility several times trying to find bits on the Audi system - it will list all dealers who have stock of a particular item (often gathering dust in a parts bin). If they're willing to do this they should be able to tell you where in the UK a dealer has one in stock - just a case of getting them to express deliver it to you.

If no-one has one, have you tried asking Steptoe (I'd think he carries spares like this)? What about a Touratech ceramic one?

There have been no 1150 clutches for the last few weeks. Anywhere.
I was tipped off and had the last two in the country :D

Don't expect any this month. :(

Thanks for rapid response and info guys. Local BMW dealer's computer is showing 3 on shelf in UK but that probably isn't real. Touratech ceramic is nearly £450 - too much. Frosti in Ireland has recommended a US import at around $240, which I will look into.

I notice the lining is riveted - I think there are still companies which will reline clutch plates and brake shoes - may look into this. Has anybody got a used clutch plate I can buy?

Whats the part nr? I can check if there are any over here in belgica and send one over or rendezvous with someone heading for the Zeebrugge Hull ferry if there is anyone on that route in the next day or two....

Thanks Mike, I'm at work, so only able to catch up intermittently. Now waiting for a call-back from Olly at Wollaston Motors Northallerton, who thinks he has one. Fingers crossed...

Olly came through! £98 + delivery vs about £66 from Motorworks, but on its way. :clap

I really appreciate the help offered, it was Mike's suggestion of the dealer search that found this.

Thanks to all. :beerjug:

Is it true a VW Beetle plate fits??

That was going to be where I went next! Somebody must know if the 1150 friction plate fits anything else at all...

Beyond that, I was going to explore getting it re-lined by e.g. http://www.custombrakes.co.uk

However, hopefully now sorted. Going out for an observed ride with the ARB on Sat pm, then bike comes home for gearbox out.

Not sure how "advanced" I'm going to be with a slipping clutch, but it seems to be oil contamination - worse after standing and improves with use. It may also be slave cylinder sticking, as it started after I changed the clutch fluid. Will report back when done. :beerjug:

louis do the oil resistant one and a lucas one, and there are several clutches for sale on ebay (de)

Lucas do a sintered metal one as well which I think is also sold through Wunderlich.

Thanks Bowser, the Lucas one would have been fine and seems to be in stock.

If anybody else needs one, LUCAS CLUTCH-DISC
MCC 608 is the part. Listed at around €90 shipped to UK - a good deal!

Thanks for the tip. I will keep it in mind.

Clutch packed up entirely yesterday, on the way back from my "observed ride" with the ARB. Stripped down today, slave cylinder and oil seal both knackered. Not got the clutch out yet, but it looks a bit thin. Also the slave end of the clutch hose is rotten and ready to fail.

Paid Wollaston's about £30 for Saturday delivery - nada, nothing, zip, zilch. Phone call to them 9am tomorrow, I think. So, I'm stuck until the friction plate turns up and also the braided clutch hoses I ordered on Tuesday from Probrake.de.

This would seem like an appropriate place to leave it and seek beer.

If anybody wants close-ups of anything whilst I have it apart, speak now or forever etc...

Just out of interest, the biggest hassle was the gear position indicator switch. I could NOT get the plug through between the ABS unit and the gearbox, I had to cut the wires (or take the ABS unit out). To compound it, I pulled the top off the switch to try and get that through the other way (doesn't fit) now I have to reassemble 3 little plungers & springs :blast

And I'll be in the car to work next week, sat in queues watching other drivers pick their noses, eat cornflakes and put their make-up on. 5 miles to work, 10-15 mins on the bike, can take over half an hour in the car, damnit! :banghead:

Feckin BMWs, eh? Looking at your bike, small wonder it costs so much to pay to get the clutch changed (and mine will need doing pretty soon, oh bugger).

By comparison, on my old CB500, the clutch gave out really badly on the way to work once, on about 110,000 miles. Just about got there, got plates and gasket from Metropolis, I changed it in the car park, using common tools in half an hour.

Looks like you need that beer.

Jon, don't worry too much - it's not difficult, you just need to take it steady and systematic. Plenty of good threads on here to help:

Certainly more hassle than a conventional wet clutch on most bikes though!

I understand BMW allow 6 hours labour - about right I guess, if you have the bench, tools and a bit of practice. I'm hoping not to have this apart again, so I'm trying to replace everything that may need it in the next 50k or so.

I note Steptoe advises against replacing good oil seals, so I'm just doing the leaky one behind the slave cylinder.

Onwards and upwards :thumby:

While the bike is in that state it is also well worth checking the condition of the splines on the gearbox input shaft. Premature wear is not unknown DAMHIK :tears
