I'm about to change out the slave cylinder on my '02 1150 GS as the pushrod bearing is on its way out.
Beside the slave cylinder itself I'll be swaping out the clutch hose as there is significant corrosion.
Is there anything else I should be adding to the shopping list as a pre-emptive move?

Thanks
Neil

Neil,

Don't forget to replace the bearing seal as well and check the runout on your pushrod. Mine's a tad bent  but will probably change it, and the funny piece of felt, while the bike's apart.

BTW, the usual suppliers are all closed at the moment so I can't get a clutch until next week.

Are you taking the gearbox off or do you have the pullers?

It's worth replacing the clutch bleeder valve with one similar to the front brake bleed valve to make the job easier.

Hi Paul
Not pulling the box off, just the slave cylinder off the back, as the release bearing in the slave cylinder is on its way out.
No clutch prob's or oil leaks round the slave cylinder

I didn't know you could replace the bearing in the slave cylinder: Please tell from where you get that part. :nenau

This is a copy of a post I submitted in the summer.

In January, Jonno at Adventure Bike Warehouse serviced my bike and noticed that the rubber hydraulic clutch pipe and slave cylinder bleed pipe on my standard 02 bike were starting to swell. I immediately asked Jonno to book me in for a replacement. Jonno recommended going for the stainless steel version as fitted as standard to the GSA.

Unfortunately the bleed pipe was not available in this country and Germany, and although they gave a production date of May, they did not materialise.

After some research on the web I contacted ProBrake (www.probrake.de) in Germany and explained the problem. They actually produce the clutch pipe and were prepared to manufacture a special for the bleed pipe based on an original which I posted off to them. The resulting 'bleed' section is different to the original but in Jonno's view, far superior.

The parts were ordered on a Sunday night and arrived at my house on Thursday of the same week! Jonno fitted them today and the originals crumbled as he took them off. He continually referred to the quality of the items which were a perfect fit.

The cost of the pipes was about 35% of the BMW originals! (now just under 48 Euros plus post)
I hope this helps someone on here who have the same problem.

I have no affiliation to either ProBrake or Adventure Bike Warehouse except as a satisfied customer.

The clutch bleed pipe produced by ProBrake is stainless steel and simply has a bleed nipple at the end. They produce it now on their website and is advertised on their website:-

Mike R,
Very nice find - I'm in the middle of a servoectomy at the moment (Nurse!) so the braided brake hoses they offer for the 1150 will be a welcome upgrade. I'll do the clutch slave while I'm at it!

Thank you for posting this - very helpful!

Cheers,
Fin.

Right, I'm back up to speed on this, and I should know because I have seen enough gearbox and clutch parts recently, that you can not remove the bearings I was thing about without splitting the cases.

So the question still stands Neil: Where does this slave cylinder bearing come from?

HiYa Paul
I'm going to fit a new slave cylinder from M-W, and take the oppertunity to pull the old slave apart. The bearing maybe unique to BMw but there are ways and means of fitting replacements, I've a lathe, milling machine and a retired ex aircraft engineer (the old man)
Following Mike R's link :thumb2 I've also got a new bleed hose coming.

Cheers
Neil

PS
There are a couple of boxes on eblag at the mo' if you still need one....

Okay. Make two bearings please because I was doing this in January and have a spare slave cylinder to repair. :thumb2

You'll need the bearing holder (thrust piston) as well .

The bearing takes it out when it seizes and spins.
Time you've bought all the parts, sourced the seal and machined it and re-assembled it's cheaper buying a new one for £65 with a guarantee.

I know, i've been there and done it. ;)

Thanks Mike R

As it says...

Probrake delivered my new clutch vent/bleed pipe within 2 day of ordering, and only 57Euro including p&p for s/steel fittings, an excelent service

Neil

PS
Now if M/W can get the slave cylinders in stock its all systems go

BMW germany had none at the beginning of last december and weren't expecting any until well into the new year.

I bought a few from james sherlock while they were still available to keep on the shelf to get any of my customers out of the shite in the event their slaves went tits up. .
