Can anyone point me in the right direction for a thread describing the ins & outs for the replacement of the oil seal which the clutch pushrod passes through on the back of the gearbox.

I have noticed oil leaking out from around the clutch slave cylinder.

This seal has leaked before so I want to catch it early before it contaminates the clutch itself. The BMW seal is not very substantional so planing on using a double lipped with garter spring.

I understand you can swop the seal in situ but would like to read up on it first.

Any help gratefully recieved.

It's possible to remove the seal by prying it out using a small flat screwdriver or similar. Remove the slave cylinder, before removing the seal. note how far into the casing it is pressed, then remove the seal being VERY CAREFUL not to damage the shaft or gearbox casing. Lubricate the lip of the new seal then press it in, you'll probably find a socket the correct size for this, use the end the ratchet goes into, as this should be quite flat & won't damage the seal. Be careful to press it in only as far as the old one came out.
Hope this helps.
Brian.

Cheers for the tip chap.

I started pulling things apart and had a closer look at the slave cylinder. The work shop manual says to lift the rear frame for easier access. There is a cross tube that looks like it can be removed and give me all the access I need. It is number 2 in the picture and sits right in front of the slave cylinder.

Will it just come out after unbolting it or is it part and parcel of the frame and best left well alone?

Also anybody got any thoughts on using double lipped seals for extra sealing properties?

Cheers

Oil Seal out

After pulling the clutch slave cylinder I peered in the hole to find some oil, not a lot but oil nether the less.

Questions

I believe the part number for the BMW sealis 23127656019.
Motorworks are quoting £8.68 Whereas I can get the same from Simply bearings for £1.08 for a single lip seal or £5.90 for a double lip seal.

Is a double lipped seal recommended or just over kill?

When refitting the oil seal the manual makes no mention of the distance it should be pushed into and I forgot to measure it. Do you know how far it should go in from the lip

The push rod was difficult to pull out, had to grip the end with pliers. It appears to be straight so I rolled it on a piece of glass and it looks OK
Is this normal?

What exactly is the felt for?

Many thanks and I hope I'm not being a pest

Have you tried a BMW main dealer for the part ??

You may find that they are cheaper than motorworks on a lot of parts, people just assume that they must be cheaper than main dealers without checking first.

Nope, automatically go straight to Motorworks. Old habits die hard!!!!

Where do you get yours from? I also read somewhere about the seals being uprated and are now Brown in colour, do you know anything about that?

Lastly (sorry) thoughts on double or single lips - over kill or makes sense?

TTFN

I use genuine seals, haven't a clue if the double lipped is any better, i've not had any of the ones i've fitted come back leaking so they must work ok.

Ah right oh, I shall try the local BMW dealer tomorrow and see what they've got.

One last thing, How far do you push the bugger in as I forgot to measure it.

Cheers
