hi guys my 30 thousand mile rockster has got a fair bit of clutch slip .
i am going to do the job myself but as i have never done one before do you have any tips and advice
many thanks in advance
cheers ian

30k ? That bit low mileage , sure adjustments correct? Or is there oil leak ?

It's not an easy job as the whole back end of the bike has to be hinged upwards to expose the back of the gearbox etc. However there are several good reports on here & it can be done by a reasonably competent spanner monkey. Don't skimp on just changing the pressure plate, get a complete kit or you'll just end up doing the same thing agin but much sooner. Be methodical with the strip down making notes of what goes where and if possible document the job with photos you can refer back to if need be. Do not remove the long bolt that goes through the engine & front end of the rear subframe, instead slacken the bolts on this and hinge up from this point.

Some pointers here

many thanks, yes i must admit i did think maybe an oil leak,i rode it in sweltering heat the other day for 550 miles with full luggage in germany, just maybe that seal may have sprung a sweaty leak, one day next week i will take out the box and have a look

If you have the time and the nouse to do it, all the best. Could it just be cable adjustment, I know with my R1100RS you can also adjust it where the release arm is at the back of the gearbox.
You could take it to Steve Scriminger at Scriminger Engineering in Sleaford. Would suggest you give him a bell, he refurbished, removed and refitted the gearbox to my R1100RS for £550. A clutch job would cost far less.

Good luck however you proceed.

Right fizzer look inside is the ball end of the clutch lever fouling on the inside of the hand-guard?

If it is? Knock the handgaurd up (CAREFULLY) so that the ball end of the clutch lever follows the line of the groove

You should see a rub if its been fouling, Fairly common on a lot of GSA's

Oh and Don't knock it Adjust and go see Unless you have blued the feck out of it by just "bulling on" it should cure it

i certainly do, drfarkoff

hi karlread, the clutch is non ajustable mate its hydraulic not cable .
drfarkoff just checked that mate there is a good half an inch gap mate but thanks i know always to check the obvious first :thumb

Take the starter out first. There you get a sight into the clutch and can see if there is some oil in the clutch plate.
