Clutch slippage???? I think

Funny thing is though I can pull away fine even on an incline, It does not start to slip till I am approaching 4k revs.

i guess that's the point where the torque developed reaches a point where it overwhelms the clutch.

It sounds very much like it.

I can live with it for the mo as no trips planned to go off island, well not till end of april so going to strip it soon and replace it.

Are you sure there isn't any other underlying fault eg master or slave cylinder problem, gearbox shaft seals leaking etc??

It might be worth removing the starter motor and inspecting inside the bellhousing for oil contamination, thats usually the first port of call for the dealers.

I took a look at my GSA today after the clutch slip I experienced on Sundays ride, no sign of excess fluid in the reservoir, no oil staining at the bellhousing joint and the sump oil level was correct (bike just given its 12000 service at dealers). Clutch lever is well clear of the handguard.

I'm going for a spin tomorrow to see if I can repeat the clutch slip at 4500rpm (overtaking zone), then it'll be a trip back to the dealers for an extended warranty job if it is due to clutch problems. :(

Oh man, looks like I have started a trend here lol.

I got 3 months warrentry with the bike but I doubt very much they will pay for it to be done, as it will be down to wear and tear no doubt.
Mind you if an oil seal has gone then that might be something different.
Got my manual today so the starter will be out at the weekend for a looksee.

I havehad a good look around the bike and can see nothing untoward, tonight I decided to have a little play as the roads where dry and decided to push it a little and it was slipping like hell at times and boy was it stinking when i pulled up at some lights. Real wierd smell like burning rubber but not, and the smell was coming fron the front of the bike, up through the clocks area.
Now my guessing surly if the clutch was slipping that is towards the rear of the bike and the smell should be coming from foot peg area???
What is the belt at the front of the bike for, I know i should look in the book but it is down stairs lol.

Ηι spike, the frontd belt is called "alternator belt" and it is supposed to change every 60.000Km.

I do not thing that it is your case.

The burning clutch smell permeates from beneath the bike, hard to pin down where exactly it gets out but it sounds like your clutch is slipping by the symptoms you describe.

I took mine out for a blast today and had no slippage this time. The only thing I discovered was the rubber cap inside the reservoir was pulled down, touching onto the fluid surface, I pushed it back to a pleated shape and then reinserted the cap and all is well again, the level is as it should be with an air gap above the fluid level but beneath the rubber seal under the cap.

Hope you get yours sorted, I don't think it is your alternator belt as they usually snap when badly worn, and if slipping you lose charge to the alternator/battery.

If it is a slipping clutch i've never known one cure itself. They get worse.

So see what happens in the weeks ahead.

Thanks for all the answers guys.

I will be taking out the starter this weekend to see if I can pin point it, if not it will be getting stripped and replacing whatever needs replacing.

My bikes do not get used alot over here in guernsey its more used when away in france or over in the UK so it needs to be right.

Just a thought, but the bike's not done many miles to have eaten a clutch. My 1150 had the same symptoms at a similar milage. I replaced the clutch. £££. Problem remained :-(. Turned out to be the metalastic drive shaft had failed. I finally identified the problem by facing the bike to the wall, pulling back the FRONT drive shaft/swingarm boot and attempting to drive into the wall (!!) making the slip occur. The front part of the shaft was observed to turn by an assistant.... whilst the rear whell did not. More £££... but a fixed GS. Like I say, just a thought.
