Sometimes but not always when I let the clutch out in first I get a squeel, it doesn't slip or drag and like I say it doesn't do it every time I stop but its worrying me, is it the sound of impending large expense?
I don't sit with the bike in gear at traffic lights niether do I do do drag race starts, I have checked around the slave cylinder and its as clean as a whistle but the fluid in the master cylinder is a muddy brown colour could this be signs of a problem with the master or slave cylinder?
Bike has done 17,000 miles and I have just had the alternator belt changed to rule that out.
Like I say it doesn't do it every time I stop and it only does it when I let the clutch out in first , never heard it in any other gear or coming down the box.

Any suggestions would be gratefully recieved :)

What sort of squeel? What sort of duration are you talking about? If you've had the belt changed it implies its quite a long squeel like a slipping belt? How old is the bike too? 17k is nearly new or has it just been rarely used? Do you know how its been ridden in the past? Could it be the damping rubber in the driveshaft slipping?

Yes. When was it last bled ?
Bleed it so you know the fluid is clear to start with and then check the condition/colour after a weeks use.

But it sounds like the thrust bearing in the slave cylinder is on the way out, which colours the fluid a browny or grey metalic colour. .

The bike has lived a very charmed life, it's a 2001 model, 1st owner never used it in the wet and has only been used whilst he was on holiday, that's why such low mileage, I changed the belt as I was told it was due thinking it might have been the squeal but then it occurred to me it only happens when I let the clutch out in first.
I shall follow your advice steptoe an change the fluid for a start and see if that helps as it is defiantly muddy brown.
Cheers for replies

I was going to say loose belt and when you put load on the engine the belt starts to slip...
BUT...
Steptoe is on the case so I will shut the f**k up and let him do his thing....

Update on the clutch, I bled the fluid until clear but noticed it was turning brown again fairly quickly so purchased a slave cylinder which my mate changed (he has a ramp far easier to access than laying on the floor) When he took the old cylinder out it was full of brown gunge which I assume was brake fluid and gave the housing a good clean out before refitting the cylinder. The resulting cylinder change has made a big difference, the bike still gives out a small squeel when the clutch is let out but I have only had the chance too ride it twice and now it only does it when you start off for the first time so I am assuming maybe a bit of the old brown fluid got on the plate, anyway new cylinder has made a big difference and am a very happy camper, cheer's Steptoe for the advice:beerjug:

I would still check the belt tension.
