Does anyone know the co2 rating of the 1200 boxer? Would like to use it next time i see a politician, to complain why a 1.4 Renult Megan is half the cost of my bike to tax per year, yet its 10 times heavier, worse for roads and environment
I wouldn't get too hung up on it, its just a tax after all, not hypothecated for road maintenance or the like. Its calculated to extract the maximum revenue. The CO2 part of it is to justify extracting that little bit more without argument from the 4x4 owning middle classes.
The 1200GS isn't exactly the greenest machine on the road, so I wouldn't bang your environmental drum too loud.
If you're really worried about road damage and pollution, look at the cost of LGV and HGV licences.

Let's hope that HMG does not realise that you are right, leaving the tax for your BuMW the same whilst quadrupling (or more) the tax on 1.4 litre cars. This will be in recognition that they are (allegedly) ten times heavier and worse for the road and the environment.
Of course it will ignore that the same 1.4 litre car can carry at least three times the number of passengers as the green motorcycle, along with all their luggage and will have a life expectancy of, let's say, four times the length of the green motorcycle before it itself needs to be recycled.
If you want to avoid the tax and maintain the green credentials you espouse, get a bicycle or walk.

The beauty of the whole carbon tax shit is that it gives the State the excuse they've been looking for since the first taxman clawed his way out of the primeval slime; the excuse to tax fresh air.
It has to be remembered here that LGV's more than pay for their way with respect to excise duty...... if a dig is being made it should be against the every growing trend to not bother taxing their vehicles.... & I'm sorry to say this include a large number of bikers.
Put the tax on the fuel, then there's no getting out of it
Around 72% of the price of fuel is tax. Better than that, they levy 'duty', then VAT on the price of the fuel plus the duty. So you pay a tax for paying a tax.
I couldn't agree more, and of course we all know that only a small proportion of what is paid in excise duty actually goes to the upkeep of the road....
A system though needs putting in place where all road users pay for what they drive / ride so no one can dodge paying it...
