one coil looks perfect
one coil looks rusty and knackered.

guess which one has failed?

Anyone got a spare for sale?

Visual condition is pointless with stick coils, and no indication of what works and what doesn't..

Why does it need to be a one off to put up a light hearted post which is less boring than just asking.

Is that a new one? I thought I paid about £70-80 for mine from BMW & they didn't need leads. Motorworks are £77 each

i thought it was odd too but thats the way this one is supplied - its def the right one. comes with a 690 mm lead. one piece no connector

Sounds to me as though you have just purchased the plug cap and combined HT lead for a single spark.

Stick coils do not come with a lead, the connection is at the head of the stick coil.

Motorcycle spares.net only list one item

It'll be the twin spark secondary plug lead. The HT lead that attaches to the underneth spark plug.

You could be right, but it's odd for the supplier to provide that particular lead but not the stick coils themselves. After all the stick coils will fail at a higher rate than the lower spark plug lead.

I don't think the length is right. 690mm would be OK for the single spark main HT, but too short for the twin sparks lower secondary HT.

I think they (motorcyclespares.net) don't know their BMW's as well as they should. My money is on it being the Plug cap and HT lead for a single spark.

At least the sleeve on the new stick coils are stainless steel, hopefully they'll now last longer before giving up. This is assuming that some of the failures are due to the mild steel casing rusting, and swelling, possibly damaging the windings inside?
