Apart from changing the oil and checking the primary and secondary chains there's nothing to do to them.

I had one of those. The gearbox blew up at around 10,000 miles - luckily there was still a week to go on the warranty. My 1989 1200 Sportster bought new.
My 1989 1200 Sportster bought new. Covered 16k in the first year. Apart from the paint falling off the frame and the chrome exhaust guards falling off no problem at all. The frame was powder coated under warranty and the guards replaced. Great bike, I had alot of fun on it - Put it down the drag strip, took it round Europe and commuted to Dublin once a fortnight. I once left work in Dublin on a Friday night, rode to Ghent in Belgium for a party at the Iron Horse Saloon and rode back to Dublin ready for work on Monday morning
What a great engine. Single carb and self adjusting tappets. Apart from changing the oil and checking the primary and secondary chains there's nothing to do to them.
