I bought a Sargent seat of Ebay so I will now see how I get on with that.

It’s been a while now. How are you finding it?

I’m still deciding and reading all on here makes it impossible to decide haha

I asked a guy yesterday at a fuel station if I could sit on his bike (1200GSA, 2011) as it had a Sargent seat on it. It felt ok but initial impression was this ‘ridge’ at the back would take a bit of getting used to. Also I got the feeling I was sitting on a horse saddle :-)

The look of the bike with it on was just not the same I thought, It was loosing its GSness...

So I just don’t have a clue what to do. I think I’m steering towards a Touratech Comfort Seat just based on looks. Sargent, Wunderlich, Corbin look like horse saddles and of course it’s all down to personal preference.

Trouble is it’s hard to ‘test’ them out unless you know someone with that seat and they are so expensive!

I’m hoping a used TT Comfort Seat appears on here soon and I’m quick enough to snap it up. I don’t think any of these seats will be ‘awesome’ but just better than the standard one. That’s why I’m not sure about buying brand new.

The problem with buying a seat because of its looks isn’t being kind to your behind. You don’t sit on your eyes (well most folks don’t anyway), so IMO if you are buying a seat to be comfortable it’s verging on irrelevant what it looks like.
You need to work out what is making or why the OEM seat isn’t working for you and then find a seat that removes that issue.

Corbin seats do look like like tractor seats but if you have done any long rides on one you will know their worth. When others are being crippled and struggling to get on/off and constantly fidgeting, you will be sat in luxury. It is now my first consideration when buying a bike if Corbin make a seat for it. My 1250 is sporting one and I have had to mess about with the ergonomics to Accommodate it. My 1 arthritic hip and one false hip will love me for it.

I’m not suggesting you MUST buy one, but if you are going to be on your bike for long periods then you need to be comfortable and that is about as individual as what food you enjoy. If you really unhappy with the std seat then try as many options as you can including the BMW comfort seat as there may or may not be a solution out there. It maybe that you need a seat re sculpting to your spec but just buying on what it looks like will I heavily suspect leave you frustrated and out of pocket.

Ask folks on here if you can meet up and sit on their bikes as sadly you are right in that trying before you buy is literally a PITA as it’s almost impossible.:nenau

If it had Road tyres on it then that statement is pretty much irrelevant....since most use the GS as a road only tourer, I wouldn't worry.

Personally, I find wearing cycling shorts with a padded crotch under bike trousers solves most saddle issues.
Still on the oem seat after 25k miles...with no need to change it. It's bedded in nicely now.

Especially effective if you have multiple bikes...

I had the seat issue on my standard 1150gs, constant moving about to last longer in the saddle.
On my 1200 wc I have the seat set high at the front and lower setting at the back. This seems to level it out and not rolling forward, which seems to bring on the dreaded.
So far, touch wood, I find it spot on and ready for mile munching.

Thanks for the input Gents. Taken in and appreciated as always.

Yes I could be being a tad picky when it comes to the looks. I have K60 Scout Tyres on and like the robustness of the look. One I want to try and keep. I spent that much money on the bike then the look matters to me but of course so does the comfort. And remember Finnish prices are crazy.

In Finland many of the ‘main’ roads are not tarmac, however most of my time is on the tarmac and the K60 Tyres (although a bit noisy IMO on the tarmac) give a good balance. Having a seat that looks like a tractor seat would actually probably fit right in here :-)

I think if I was really honest I could ‘rough’ it and stick with the standard seat. But anyone can ‘rough it’

Just a little more comfort to get a few more miles in would be nice. It’s all meant to be fun on a bike and stopping off for a brew is all part of that fun so maybe stop off more regularly and drink more brews :-)

Like I said I can read to death about it but I would say Sargent seems to stand out more for people in general but looking at it and sitting on it yesterday, it’s not for me and again all down to personal preference.

If something comes up on here or fleabay for a good price then I would take to try it out, I’m not going to pay new prices and ‘take a chance’

The Touratech for me stands out because I like the look and apparently very similar to the Ergo Wunderlich (but not a horse saddle) Made by the same people I think.

So for now I will ‘rough it’ and eyes peeled for a second hand one.

I’m probably over thinking all this :-)

I have had several seats and I only ride on roads, my comments are as follows:-

The stock seat on the R1200GSA is not too bad, not as good as the R1200RT, the stock seat on the F800GS was a thing of torture, the BMW comfort seat for the F800GS was an improvement but not massively better.

Ive had Sargent seats, on my K1300S, Ducatis ST4 & MTS1200, they are much better than standard.

Ive had Corbins on two F800GS's & R1200GSA and it will be going (all things being equal) on my R1250GSA.

The Corbin is the best of the bunch, my opinion of course.

A friend has a Touratech on his Triumph and it makes it bearable.

Everyone is different, id new prepared to buy a new Corbin but only after I had bought two used ones to prove they suit me.

@Macca, please take notice that the sargent seat you tryed (2011gsa) is completly different from the 2013 on gsas

I also have a 2011. As said above the standard seat is kind of bearable but I just feel it’s worth spending some money for the right second hand seat. The Sargent yesterday was looks wide and seating wise a bit of a disappointment from what I had been reading and expecting. Of course I only sat on it not ride 500 miles but initial thoughts were mmmm I don’t like.

For the record I also sat on the 1250 yesterday in the showroom with standard seat and it seems they have made some big improvements. What it’s like long distance of course I don’t know. In a couple of years when I own I will let you know. 30,000 Euro here new so I will have to wait haha. ( I won’t be buying from here ) :-)

Well, I have now a 1250 with standard seat, before that I a had 2013 gs lc and from my experience the seats are the same, a couple of months ago I did a 5000km trip and on my first day I did 3 countries and 1200km on 12h  ... and no problem at all :D , stopped and rested 15m or so every couple of hours and arrived a little tired but with a good enough ass to do 900km the following day :thumb

"30,000 Euro here new" Holy mother of god !! And we think we are hard done by at around 17k ?

Tell me about it :-( If you bring a vehicle into Finland new or 10 years old you have to pay taxes. It’s based on age, mileage, emissions etc. The two GSA 1250’s I seen yesterday were 29500 ex demo with 900km on the clock and the other a new one that was 31000. None of them come with any luggage etc although I have seen some elsewhere with luggage for around same price. Surprisingly there are a few riding about the place!

When the time is right I will buy a 1250 from UK or Germany for example and bring it across. I would definitely save a huge chunk of cash that way.

Many people go to Germany to buy their cars also. The vehicle market here is absolute madness.
