Okay guys & gals.

I am trying to find a GSA comfy seat for my bony ass, so before I fork out a couple of hundred quid on a seat that don't work can anyone recommend a seat, air thingy or cheap additional padding that would work best. I've tried an Air Hawk and still got a numb bum after a few hours in the saddle.
It's days like this when I wish I had a fat butt!!

My gsa seat was to firm when i got it but i have no issues with it now after 12000 miles,it has found the shape of my butt and i can now sit there all day in reasonable comfort,Sat on 1 with the inserted gel pad and didnt find it much better which is why i kept my own, cant comment on seats like the sergeant but i think they would not suit everyone either:)

Agree. If you havn't had the bike long, give it a few thousand miles before laying out any cash on mods. The seat will break in - as will your arse.

Well I found that the stock seat (and stock butt) never broke in. I couldn't do more than 50 miles before numb bum set in. I tried an AirHawk and although pretty good, I wanted a more permanant solution (didn't like the fact that some bugger could nick it). I was lucky enough to be able to borrow Thunders Sargent seat for a day and that convinced me to buy one for myself. What a difference ! I was able to do 350+ days with my ass only getting tired near the end. A half hour break would sort that out and I'd happily do another 200+ before calling it quits for the day. I'd go as far to say that the Sargent was the best aftermarket accessory I bought for the GS. If I decide to keep my FZS1000 for another couple of years, I'll buy a Sargent for it too. :thumb2

I bought my Sargent seat after 2500 miles on my standard GSA seat, it was bought to make allowance for my lack of inside leg measurement, I did not think it was any better than my standard seat in terms of comfort.
Every individual is different and it is all very subjective, so the answer is:-

Copious amounts of meat and potato pies :D:D:D

Best regards Stretch :)

Russell day long saddle was the holy grail for me. The Sargent and Wunderlich seats didn't work so I bought a second hand seat and took it out to the USA with me on a holiday and dropped into Shasta Lake, California and got Russell's to convert the seat. The result is true all day comfort.

When I had my GS I had the same issue, but I never found anything to resolve it to any degree of satisfaction. Tried gel inserts, changing seat heights and airhawk. Whilst the airhawk does relieve it, I couldn't ride on the twists with it as you don't feel connected to the seat (and yes I had the correct amount of air in ie as little as possible). It was good for long motorway stints though.
With my GSA I found it was hard at first, but then bedded in. Also you need to 'train' your bum, if you're not used to long distances it will go numb quickly. The more you ride, the more stamina it has. At the end of last year I didn't ride the bike for a couple of months for one reason or another, and when I first started riding again I got a numb bum after 45 mins, but now it's fine again :thumb2

Bought my Sargent seat second hand, and initially thought it was no better than the stock seat.
It was only after doing the first 400ml stint that I realised my backside was not numb and just how good the Sargent was.
Alternatively something else that works for me is to wear a pair of quality cycling shorts as underwear.

Unfortunately there is no definitive answer as we are all different and expect different things. Maybe someone in your local area will let you borrow a seat for a couple of days and you can judge for yourself.

Occasionally after market seats are offered for sale on here.

I bought a Corbin seat off this site for a fair price, and although very comfortable it made the seat height too much for me. I was then able to sell it on here without loss (or gain!).

My next step was a Sargent from this site, again for a fair price. This one suits me perfectly, and when I come to sell the bike I will get all or most of my money back again.

So if you can afford the outlay, try buying a secondhand seat, try it and if it's not for you sell it on again and try something else.

I never really had an issue with the standard Gsa seat on either my '06 or '10 bikes.

But I treated myself to a Sargent seat last year....

....initially it didn't seem any better than the BMW one, in fact it seemed a bit uncomfortable....

.....as a few have mentioned, after a couple of thousand miles it was moulded to my backside and was really comfortable.

If you get one, then stick with it and you'll be rewarded. :thumb2

Can I ask the OP and any of you guys for that matter - is the issue simply a 'numb bum'?

For me a far bigger issue is a painful coccyx; and I mean really painful after one hour in the saddle.

Really spoiling the riding and this years tour of Europe is starting to look like a torture trip.

Not done a lot of riding with them yet, but initial impressions are it is gonna be far comfier over distance. Do not know much about GSA seat, but my GS one was very firm, especially towards rear where there is almost no padding standard.

Rider and Passenger seat sorted for £80 all in.

One other thing,my standard gsa seat only suits me in one position, high setting at front and low at back, worth playing about with ,well was for me:aidan

Learn to fidget, kids in cars tend not to get numb bums because they are forrever moving about!!

Wow, good replies.

It is my arse bones that ache, my coccyx is fine. It may be that I really do need more padding on my gluts.

I reckon I might try, in this order, changing the angle of seat, the cycling shorts, a second hand seat (Tony Archer) and lastly a brand new custom seat.

Thanks to all.

I find it's the ischial tuberosities (actual bones you sit on) and piriformis muscles that are the bits to go numb/sore on every bike other than the GS. On the GS I got a lot if coccyx pain, tingling and actual numbness around the coccyx. I put it down to pressure from the pin that locks the seat. This was the main reason I got rid of the GS. I tried gel inserts which didn't help. Thankfully I've had no such trouble on the GSA :thumb2

If you want to try a tony archer seat before you buy I have one. For the GSA. I recommend you do to avoid disappointment.

I also recommend Corbin as I have one. - You are welcome to sit on it but it stays on my bike. I paid over £700 notes for it and don't regret a penny.

Truly amazing how that company get things so right.
