Actually it would be interesting to get the statistics. Certainly in the Amateur Service these days it seems it is hardly 'policed' at all! In '78 it was the Home Office and by '83 it was the DTI. Since then it's passed through the Radio Communications Agency and is now OfCom. It's true that the Police have very little power to seize equipment unless it is stolen and the prosecution is the responsibility of the Central Govt Dept.

There used to be much more attention paid to the 'new age' of radio, particularly in the 70s and 80s.

Depending on the offence and employer, check out the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act, you possibly don't have to disclose your past conviction, even if it does still stand on record.

Yes you are right - the 'police' would (rightly) have ZERO interest in the type / size /length etc of anybodies aerial. Contrary to popular belief they do have better things to do !!

Hint taken from your profile :bow :bow :bow . I would also think that these govt agencies now have more to be worried about (mooooslims etc) than an illegal pmr transmitter.

Not the police, its the Home Office. I guess you may be suprised at how many prosecusions there are each year for illegal radio equipment. I got cought in 1978 and its still on file as a crimanl prosecution that I have to disclose every time I make a job application.

Unless it's work with kids, the police, armed forces and I suspect the NHS, your conviction is 'spent' and you're under no obligation to report it.

I was only stating that external aerials are agianst the law and giving a warning to people that might not know!!!!

Minor technical point. I think you will find if you put a drop of superglue on each end of the ariel extension cable so it is technically permanent it is no longer illegal.

this is IMHO not correct

it doesn't matter if you fix that external aerial to your bike.

the fact remains that, under PMR regulations, a license-free PMR may not have a external antenna. It has an antenna which is fixed to the radio itself.

you can glue, screw, weld or whatever you wanna do with it, an external antenne will always be an external antenna.
