Yikes, that is a lot of money! Once my house sale goes through end of Feb (lots of touching of wood), I'll have about £10,000 to play with and a part exchange worth about £4,700.

I had poo poo'd the Multi Strada cos it was just too expensive, but that pitched against a GSA ??? could end up pretty well financially matched ....... Ummmmmmm.....

That's if you want those extras of course. You don't have to have them.

The price of the GSA with the dynamic and premium packs is £13460. That's a long way from your £15k. But let's not let the truth get in the way of a good story eh Johnny

Rusty bolts/nuts ... stainless packs on ebay £20
Center stand ... get powder coated £20
Boots guards ... get powder coated £10
Innaccurate and misleading fuel gauge ... fill it to the top not half way etc £0
Very stiff / sticky ignition ... go to a locksmiths and get the stuff they use, not WD40 £5
Gear change lever ... grease the linkage arm it goes stiff £3
Squeeling brakes ... copper slip the rear of pads £3

Aluminium luggage ... what do you expect from aluminium?

Most bikes will be fitted with Premium and dynamic Packs which is £13460 and add in Panniers and Topbox, should you need them and if it's a new purchase you probably will.......... that's about £750 - which tops out at over £14,200 - before you tinker with the TT goodies

So not that far short

You make a supreme defender of the 1200 series................our hats are off to you

I dealt with Craig, the bike technician today and discussed all these faults. These were his answers -

Very stiff / sticky ignition - sprayed some 'wurth' lubricant down it.......still the same

Front tyre loosing quite a bit of pressure (worst with OE metz exp but still doing it with anakee 2) Been checked by 2 professionals but cant see a fault - well if they cant see a fault,neither will we

Very still gear changing 1st thing in the morning - As above answer........mentioned putting in thinner oil but id be paying for that

BMW roundal from under handlebars flew off one day on the move - That'll be warranty then

Scuffed through handle bar by the overhead cable - we'll put it to the warranty dept. but dont expect miracles

Terribly corroded 3 box ADV alu luggage - looks awfull, WILL NOT autosol out. I'll put it to the warranty dept. but dont hold your breath....thats a lot of money

So i did!!!............Every bike i have ever owned gets plastered with anti-corrosion stuff and in this day and age i use both ACF 50 and FS365 and ALWAYS hose down a salty bike and re-apply - i spend a fortune on the stuff!

Ignition lock: I have the same issue. Will insist on a replacement lock at the next service

Front tyre: sounds very much like a leaking wheel. Get it replaced. It will NEVER hold air properly.

Stiff 1st gear: definitely worth trying some thinner oil. FWIW, I changed the engine oil to Mobil semi-synthetic 10W40 and the oil consumption has gone down from 0.8 litres/1,000 miles with 20W50 to zero since the change 2,000 miles ago.

BMW roundel getting unstuck: they all do that , sir.

Paint: the waterbased paints now in use are no good. The plastic immobiliser fob rubbed the paint off my fork yoke. Couldn't be bothered to have it replaced under warranty. The words "not fit for purpose" come to mind.

Corroded alloy boxes: my expandable (plastic) panniers don't corrode . You could always spray-paint them matte black...

ACF 50: I've heard of warranty claims that were rejected because ACF 50 had been used on the bike. Yer pays yer money...

That can't be true!

BMW dealers offer a winter valet with either the Scotoiler stuff or ACF50. It wouldn't make sense for a dealer to risk using a warranty invalidating product on a customer's bike

Here's the thing.

I went to buy a new Tenere. I inspected the quality and found lots of zinc coated stuff and mid steel. In many areas the paint was thin or even see-through. It was a cheap bike to buy but was going to have a lot of quality issues as I ride through winter. I bought the 1200 instead because quality while having issues is generally very good, certainly better than anything Japanese bar Honda.

If I spent 14k on a bike I wouldn't have an attitude about correcting minimal things that happen because of daily usage.

I agree with you on the wheel thing but most of what you're bitching about makes me think you need to hand the keys back and get yourself in a car.

And no I wouldn't spend 14k on a new bike as I'm not that rich/dumb and it would end up looking like my 05 bike ... which cost £5k fully loaded with tons of shit.

PS) the seals on the switchgears just failed on mine. Cost ... £250 to replace both.

Actual cost... £0 (cut the tips of rubber gloves, greased and cable tied. )

Because I could be bothered.

But you ignore the fact Johnny that you can go into a BMW dealer and order one without any options for £10745. Not to mention the option of the standard 1200GS at £9925. Funny how you use the price of the GSA in your figures and not the standard bike.

PS I'm not defending the 1200, I'm merely correcting the inaccuracies you are putting about about pricing. Surely its not too difficult for you to present the facts?

So why don't BMW do all of this - make the customer happy ---and add the £100 on to the cost of the bike.

Or in the case of the fuel guage -- JUST MISS IT OFF and charge less for the bike.

How many people ride a bog standard, base 12GS or 12 GSA - no heated grips, no computer - nobody - I even doubt BMW would sell/build you a base bike with no extras - go try

Pricing - I was glibly quoting the most popular and nominaly 'standard' options on a 12GSA in the vast majority of UK spec type - check the BMW mainframe, if you don't believe me

My 1200GS was bought in Oct 09. No problems as yet. Pricewise, for £10,995 I got both dynamic and premium packs, plus free vario plastic panniers. I had a winter valet with AC50 in the price.

I've since added a fender extender and a crud catcher to try to keep the front of the engine free from corrosive muck and I also hose it down after each ride in the winter. My Suzuki Bandit K6 which I traded in had no corrosion despite regular winter use so I will be monitoring the BMW finish quite closely, although I did wipe the Bandit down with WD40 after each wash. I will be asking Bahnstormers to put right anything I feel is not up to standard and not caused by carelessness or neglect on my part.

It helps to be 6' tall and 16st, and have the grumpy old man attitude of a Sagalout....

The paint falls off and the bolts rust on all modern bikes these days.

Deal with it and ride the thing is my mantra. Mine's almost 3 years old, the paint hasn't fallen off, the bolts haven't rusted and I ride 60 miles to work and back every day.
